The clear coats from the 80's (?) had some issues with IR or UV which made them peel or scale off pretty quickly. If that's the condition of yours, a few hours with a sanding block and sandpaper...

Mark, the closest original '56 color to 'your description' was crocus yellow and laurel green... which there were a number of very descriptive labels for once those paints became old and faded... ...
