    Motor Mounts

I have a 57 chevy. Bel Air with a 327 engine . I',m moving the motor mounts from the front of the engine to the side. I have a mount I have got to bolt to the frame. Do I take the front mounts off and raise the engine a little or leave them on.

If all you are doing is putting side mounts on (not moving it forward) you will be fine by just putting side mounts on, and you will no longer need the front mount, removing it is up to you if you are ok with it there then just leave it.

Do you know were you got your side mounts from? you should not have to raise the engine, although depending on what mounts you have that could happen, if they were odd mounts.

Now if you mean raise the engine to install the mounts that will help you do the job giving you added working space.

Marty, why can't you edit your post? Do you see the "Edit Post" button on the bottom of your post window? Doesn't it work?

In fact, you can have too many mounts. THREE points define a plane. If you add a fourth point, it may not be in the same plane and will put stresses on one or more mounts. Also, an engine is SUPPOSED to move relative to the frame to reduce the vibrations transmitted to it and the body. If you more rigidly attach the engine to the frame it will transmit the vibrations to the interior of the car. Three mounting points allow some engine movement.

The best and simplest type of mounting is the 3-point system, and that's why virtually every rear drive car built since 1958 has that setup. Even my Duramax truck uses a 3-point mounting scheme, two on the engine and one on the transmission.

Regarding "editing posts". I ran into the one minute limit a day or two ago. It hasn't always been that way.

Me too, I thought it was strange and unnecessary.

I think it's a setting in the site software. I also think it got changed at some point in time, likely recently, and it could have been totally inadvertent. Other sites, even trifive.com use vBulletin and don't have the 1 minute to edit.
