That's the problem we had with the "orangish" leather sample my interior guy brought up. It just didn't go with the exterior color at all. I've seen red Ferraris with the "orangish" buckskin color interiors and I thought it looked bad.
I don't think these colors go well together either, but maybe it's just me:
Here's a copper exterior and interior but it's not orange....
I think these two colors are similar to the samples I have but my charcoal may be a little darker.

Dont think you would want your interior to be "louder" than the exterior mods of your car. I would stay away from the browns just my .02
One thing I have learned is that the small leather samples always look darker than the same color in a full interior. When my interior guy gave me the tan samples I thought the darker one was too dark. I really liked the color of his wife's Tahoe interior, and when we compared the darker sample to it, it was almost identical. And you're right about getting too light and seeing every little smudge mark.

Here's a pic showing my two leather samples against my caddy headrest. I think the caddy color is called "neutral shale". You can see the difference in shade and my two samples are slightly more tan or brownish instead of grayish.
Also shown is the 2000 caddy interior. They had one called "oatmeal" and the other called "neutral shale" which was also offered on the DeVille. The oatmeal was the lighter one.

Pretty sure this is oatmeal.
This is also oatmeal:
Mine is the shale color, and I think this is too:
SO is this one:

This is a nice collection of trifive interiors you may or may not have already seen this. There are some close to what your looking at doing.
