Door Hinge Hardware - Captive Nut

Stripping my 57 2 dr hardtop down for paint prep and find there is some rust under the tabs for the door hinge captive nuts. Looks like a guy would pretty much destroy the nut bending the tabs open to get them off and do the proper rust removal and paint prep.

I did a quick search and could not find any replacement captive nuts out there on Danchuk or other similar suppliers.

I want to do a good job with the prep but I hate to bang them out and not have suitable replacements.

    Any ideas out there?

    thanks.............Mike W.

I have seen a pretty detailed thread on rebuilding the hinge boxes/cage nuts somewhere. Maybe it was from MP&C. Rest assured, it's something that can be done.

The cage is held in with three spot welds.. However, if you do plan to remove altogether, make sure to drill a couple of pilot holes for alignment during reassembly...
