    Home Defense

Well, crime is up here. And with the Obama bunch doing their best to incite civil unrest and perhaps start a race war between now and the November elections...... I took my wife to the range a couple months ago and taught her to shoot. We both attended the required training course, passed the written exam and live fire exam and got our License to Carry here in Texas.

Now its time to look at making our home harder to break into and get our home defense weaponry and ammo in hand.

I have thought about what I would like to put my hands on in the event we have a home invasion. Worst case scenario being multiple attackers entering our home, possibly from 2 directions.

Have decided that a 12 gauge shotgun with as much capacity as possible is the way to go. Have looked through Mr. Gore's internet and believe I have found what I need.

Looking at Kalishnakov based shotguns. Magazine fed 12 gauge semi-autos. Will take 5, 10 and 12 round stick magazines. Can also use 20-round and the new 25-round drum magazines (that would be my choice in a firefight). Saiga and VEPR make these shotguns in Russia. Saiga may no longer be available here Stateside, though. DDI in Tennessee also has a version with Kalishnakov parts up front and an AR type stock.

I am leaning towards the Russian built VEPR, though......

Looks like a good home defense weapon to me. Your thoughts, gentlemen?

Interesting weapon. Home invasions can be a real threat. Example in Houston: http://www.click2houston.com/news/on...n-west-houston http://abc13.com/news/one-dead-after...oting/1381422/ http://houston.cbslocal.com/tag/home-invasion/

It's difficult to plan, foresee or otherwise be clairvoyant enough to predict what will take place during an invasion to your own home. I understand the thought process surrounding the use of a shotgun however, I suggest a thorough research into exactly what took place during the initial breach into each home (find other records and data) - the time of the act (AM or PM), and what the perps did immediately. The issue is simply this; how fast can you react sitting/reclining on or in your favorite easy chair, sofa or loveseat, half asleep because the news is simply boring today, acquire your trusty home defense weapon and stop the threat without any A.D.'s or collateral damage? Let's imagine for the sake of argument that the invasion is in fact as you suggested from multiple positions of advance and you and your spouse are in two different locations of your residence and neither in direct line of fire for the first 15 seconds. Sadly, your HDW is no where near you because, as we all know when it's time to pee at our age, you just can't put it off. So, there you are, your privates out and a good stream is finally flowing, that euphoric feeling of ahhhhhhh and a horrible crashing sound of two doors being kicked in - what's your next move? Understand this, I am not making light of your plight down there. I live in fear for the safety of four of my grandchildren in your area every day.

Nobody can guess when, how, and what you might be doing at the time of a home invasion. You may be in the opposite side of the house than your guns when they break in.

So all you can do is try to have a weapon that's LOADED and relatively easy to get to if/when the time comes. If you think the odds are it will never happen to you and you don't bother buying a weapon and learning to use it, you're a sitting duck. Better have that cell phone charged and close to you to call 911, because that's probably the best you can do unless you can take on the intruder with your bare hands or some object in your house.

I have two loaded pistols (.44 and .380) within easy reach but I'm not a great shot with either of them. I'm not too concerned about it because crime is fairly low in my area but at least I'm ready. My guess is that it's more likely to happen at night while I'm sleeping, so the guns are in the bedroom. I've heard noises in the house and have actually taken the .44 with me to investigate...usually it's the cats.

I have a .44 magnum S&W revolver that I bought for bear protection while hunting in Alaska and other places where brown bears (grizzlies) and big black bears live. I've had guys tell me that a .44 magnum isn't big enough to effectively stop a bear, but I'd rather have it with me than being defenseless if I get attacked. So far I've been lucky and haven't had to use it, but I've taken it out of my holster a couple of times.

"within easy reach" implies that at least one is worn. If not, no different than protecting oneself from a grizzly, if it isn't on your hip, you're dead. BTW, and certainly not to get into a discussion of ballistics/stopping power but six rounds of
44 Magnum +P 340 GRN @ 1649fp 1478 FPS is a handful and should slow it down if you have the balls to stand and deliver.

Not true. If I hear someone breaking in and KNOW it's a break-in, I can go get my gun whether I'm in bed or not. It doesn't have to be on my hip.

Very good points. Appreciate your input, guys. I am in process of making it more difficult for anyone to break into our home. May not be able to prevent entry entirely (depending upon how much of what I have in mind my wife will go along with). But at the very least, my aim is to slow them down and require that they make a lot of noise in the process. That should buy us a little time. A very little time, but when someone is trying to kick in your door, seconds matter.

Regarding primary home defense weaponry...... I am checking out the Russian magazine fed shotguns that I linked to in my initial post. But we will also have our concealed carry pistols and a few other weapons here as well. You both make good points and yes...... In order to be able to have a weapon within reach at a moment's notice...... That means you must either wear a holster around the house or station loaded weapons in each room where only you know so that you can quickly lay your hands on them when needed.

Fortunately, we do not have small children in the house and except for close family visiting maybe 3 or 4 times a year, do not have visitors or strangers in our home. So having loaded weapons within quick reach is not a problem.

I am also looking into making our bedroom into a safe room but will have to clear that with my wife, as it requires fortifying the door same as I will our front and back doors, eliminating the bedroom window which she seems to like for some reason and lining some of the walls with 2 layers of 3/4" plywood and then either panelling them or sheetrocking over them. Will also need to install a second fortified door leading into our attached garage in case we have a fire or home invasion and need to get out. The good news is that our home is laid out so that I can see (and have a clear field of fire) to both the front and back door from our bedroom door. More on that later.

Thanks for your thoughts on this,

    Harry

Ran across this old thread just now...... Wish I could incorporate it into the more current thread having the same title which many of us have recently posted on.

    * Last post on this thread was nearly 5 years ago. 3 months after the last post, President Trump was elected and the priour 8 years of Obama and crew doing all they could to divide Americans one against the other and destroy America soon became little more than a bad dream to most. America and the world in general had 3 great and propsperous years during which the world as a whole was a much more peaceful place, overall. Not the least of which was unprecedented peace in the Middle East.

    Then came 2020......

    * The Chi-Com bio-weapon that was deployed in the closing days of 2019 spread the latest concoction of manmade coronavirus throughout the world, causing 3,372,071 deaths to date. Marxist globalists masquerading as 'Democrats' (aided by Capitalist globalists masquerading as 'establishment Republicans') used the manmade Chi-Com 'pandemic' as pretext for the biggest power grab and money grab in our nation's history.

    * Following the stolen 2020 elections, radical elements within the Marxist globalist camp seized power in Washington and with Obama pulling Biden's strings from behind the curtain...... Have done their damndest to destroy America and all semblence of peace throughout the world.

    * As a result...... In 4 short months under the illigitimate Biden regime, our nation is no longer prosperous and energy independent. We are trillions of dollars in debt needlessly. Not only Biden and crew, but the 'establishment Republican' party 'leadership' are comprised of people with ties to our nation's (and the world's) primary enemy...... Communist China. Our nation's (and the world's) 2nd most dangerous enemy Iran has become emboldened by Biden's reinstatement of Obama's appeasement policies and has directed their terrorist surrogates to attack the only true ally America has in the region (Israel)...... Plunging the Middle East into a war that is likely to soon become a regional conflict...... Or worse. As a result of Biden's (actually Obama's) policies...... Our economy and along with it, stock and bond markets both here and elsewhere seem poised for a crash in the coming months.

    * In short...... Our nation is presently going to hell in a handbasket and since the last post on this thread, radical Marxists and anarchists (some of them sitting members of congress)...... Have made good on their threats to incite the criminal element amongst their number to open violence bordering on insurrection. And predictably...... The world has become a more dangerous place.

And by insurrection, I mean the real thing...... Month upon month of rioting, arson, looting, race baiting, physical assaults and wholesale murder perpetrated by paid, armed outside agitators egging on local thugs...... Wherever complacent and/or complicit local authorities will permit them to.

Not the mostly peaceful rally and subsequent demonstration in Washington, DC on 6 January, 2021 where Antifa and BLM agitators wearing MAGA gear...... And yes, a few unarmed but unrully 'real' MAGA people as well...... Allowed themselves to become caught up in the moment after being allowed by Capital Police to enter the Capital Building beginning about 45 minutes priour to the conclusion of President Trump's comments at the rally some 8 minutes walking distance away.

    * Bottom line...... Those preparations myself and others here were considering nearly 5 years ago regarding home defense and/or personal safety when away from home...... But which we subsequently put on the back burner when things improved dramatically during the first 3 years of President Trump's term...... Must now be done. And quickly in this period of rapidly escalating violence and lawlessness we now find ourselves being drawn into.

    Best regards to all,

    Harry

Dementia Joe once said, "buy a double barrel shotgun for home defense. And, that's what I just did, but I don't think he had this one in mind........LOL!!! As far as I know, its the only bullpup double barrel pump shotgun that feeds two shells with one pump, and it holds 16 rounds. Actually, I have other firearms for home and personal defense. This one will be mainly a range toy.

Sweet! That's an interesting shotgun, Dave. How do you like it?

Wife and I decided to rely on 12 gauge semi-auto shotguns as primary weapons for home defence...... And our concealed carry pistols as backup. So I scored a used Benelli M4 (18.5" barrel) a while back (holds 7 rounds in mag tube). Like this one except previous owner had installed an adjustable length stock and vertical foregrip on ours.....

Recently ordered a magazine fed 12 gauge 'short-barreled firearm' from Kalashnikov USA as well. Not technically a 'shotgun', so shorter than 18" barrel is legal. Should arrive at our local FFL early this coming week. Most Saiga accessories are compatible. Has 12-1/2" barrel. Comes with (2) 5-round mags and I ordered additional 10-round mags for it to ensure we have what we need in the event we should find ourselves in a protracted firefight, G-d forbid......

Ran into an unforeseen glitch with that plan. Seems shotguns are a bit much for my wife to handle well. So I found her a Heckler and Koch USC carbine with 16" barrel chambered in .45 ACP for home defense. Was fortunate to find one. They are getting scarce around these parts......

Its the bare bones civilian model, so I will need to scrounge a used foregrip and adjustable length stock for it from a European UMP model, upgrade the sights and train her on it, but feel sure she will be able to handle it should the need arise.

For personal carry, I lean towards Laszlo's preference for defense against bears. Carry an ancient 60-year old S&W Model 29-2 .44 Magnum revolver with 6-1/2" barrel, iron sights and an even older pre-war N-frame S&W .38 Special backup piece with 5" barrel. OK, no 'Dirty Harry' jokes. They fit my hand, have great balance and shoot well. That's why I like 'em. No, they don't carry as many rounds as a new semi-auto. But I'm old and kinda set in my ways. So if that's an issue, I'll see if I can scrounge up another S&W .44 Magnum revolver to match the one I have now and carry 2 of them. Plus my backup piece.

Wife carries a short barrel Ruger LCRx .38 Special 5-shot revolver as her purse gun and another as her backup piece presently. For Mothers Day, I ordered her a couple 9mm semi-auto S&W M&P Shield Plus'. These are an upgrade on the older model compact M&P Shield mainly in that they have a double stack 13-round magazine and in addition to the standard 3.1" barrel, are available with a longer 4" barrel. The longer barrel is better ballistically...... Allows sufficient muzzle velocity for personal defense JHP ammo to fully expand. So that's what I am getting her. They are on pre-order. We are waiting on S&W to release the version with optional red dot optics and 4" barrel.

    Best regards to all,

    Harry

enigma, I just bought it a few weeks ago. I had been lusting after it for a while, and finally decided to pull the trigger. Problem was, I couldn't find one! Every place was out of stock. After looking for several months, I finally snagged one at Bud's Gun Shop. Not cheap by any means, but I figured with Biden in office, he might outlaw the damned thing, so I'd better buy it now. The second problem I ran into, was finding low recoil slug ammo for it. I wanted low recoil because I want to be able to fire lots of rounds at the range without killing my shoulder. And, I didn't want to buy cheap ammo, either. I got lucky last week and found 250 rounds of Federal Hydra Shok low recoil slugs.

I like that AK-style shotgun of yours. I'd like to get one of those as well.

Here's a torture test video of the DP-12. Why the shooter is dressed in a ghillie suit, I have no idea! But I can tell you this much, he has real problem with Arabs!
