I also want to thank Keith for telling CCI about this list. I agree that
he did all TriFive owners a
big favor. If Keith will let us know what car shows he will be attending
we would appreciate
it. I would like to stop by and meet him in person. Hopefully CCI will
publish something about
this list. I am very grateful that Joe Reichman , the president of my
Chevy Club told me about
this list. The ability to get answers to questions in a short time is what
makes this list so valuable
to me. Thanks to all of the list members that have posted information on
this list. And a special
thanks to Bob for putting this list together.

Like a lot of list members, I belong to 2 car clubs. One for our Chevys
and I also belong to a
Buick Club. When I tell the Buick people about this list, they all want to
get on the one for
Buicks. The only problem that there is not one for Buicks. When I tell
the Buick owners that this
list is free, it blows their minds. I forward the list to several Buick
owners in the club and even
though they don't own a Chevy, they enjoy the list. Bob, I bet you are
surprised to learn that it
is not just Chevy owners that enjoy your list. In fact the president of my
Buick club is going to
e-mail you to ask you to start a similar list for Buicks.

Carl Simpson

Editor's note. I got the e-mail from the president of your Buick Club. I
am unable to start and
maintain another Internet list. This list for Chevys is all I have time
for. As some list members
may know, it takes a lot of time and money to get a list like this started.
I told the president of
your club how I started this list and what it takes to maintain it.
Perhaps he can find someone in
your club that would like to give it a try. If they do, I wish them the
best of luck.

Bob, in the February 21 edition I commented on Ventura County Chevys being
left out of the Classic Chevy World Club listings. Within a day or so I
received an email from the President of CCI, Jim Bruce expressing concern
and
apologies for the oversight. It appears there is room for improvement both

on the part of CCI and Ventura County Chevys, however Jim said he'll ensure

we're listed in the registry. I wanted to pass this on to your readers so
they know that CCI does listen and takes action to ensure the associate
clubs
are properly recognized.

I need help bigtime. I am restoring a 57. The block has a crack in it. I
knew this
when I bought the car. The shop that rebuilds motors for me said the
crack in the
block was so bad it could not be repaired and they junked the block. They
found
me another 283 and rebuilt it for me. When the shop that is doing the
restoration
for me tried to bolt the Turboglide transmission to the motor, it would not
bolt
up. The bell housing on the transmission was about 1 inch short of the
motor. At
first the restoration shop though the rebuilt motor was not a 283. However
a
check of the engine id numbers shows it is a 1957 283 motor. Then the
restoration shop said the rebuilder somehow must have put it the wrong
crankshaft. However the engine rebuilder showed me in his manual that the
number on the crankshaft was indeed the correct number for a 1957 283 V8.
We are all stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kevin Hughes

Editor's note. I hope your engine rebuilder still has your old motor. If
they do
you are in luck. Have them pull the crankshaft out of your old motor,
rebuild it if
necessary and put it in your rebuilt motor. Then your transmission will
bolt to the
motor without any problem. For 57s with automatic transmissions and the 283
motor, Chevy used different crankshafts depending on what transmission was
used. For Powerglide transmissions, Chevy used what I call the "STANDARD"
crankshaft. For 283s with Turboglide the crankshaft was the same EXCEPT
the
hole where the torque converter fits into the crankshaft is deeper by about
1 inch.
This is because the hub on the torque converter on Turboglides is about 1
inch
longer than on the Powerglide. These Turboglide crankshafts are very
rare and
difficult to find. Most motor rebuilders throw their old engines in a junk
pile in
the back of their shop so hopefully yours will still be there. I have been
told that the
crankshaft on 283 with manual transmissions are different than on automatic
transmissions but I don't know that to be a fact. Does any list member know
for
sure? If you can not find your old crankshaft please let me know. I will
see if
any of my Turboglide Registry members can help me find one.

The 350, 400, and 700R4 transmissions will bolt up to the crankshaft you
have
on your rebuilt motor as is. In my area you can get a rebuilt 350 for
about $500.
If you can find a Turboglide crankshaft, it should cost about $200. If you
don't
care about keeping your car original and/or you want a modern transmission,
you
could get a 350 at a cost to you of $300 ($500 -$200 you don't pay for a
Turboglide crankshaft)

Hi to everyone on the list

A couple of things here, the first for your survey
I'm 51, an engineer and have my own small presswork ( stamping to you
guys) company and I bought my '56, 210, 4 door sedan in Cleveland TN ,
Christmas 1997 2 lady owners from new, mind you it had let a lot of rain
in so the floor was rotten but it runs very sweetly.
. It was an impulse buy. I shipped it back and drove it back from
Southampton Docks. It gives me the greatest pleasure driving it and
working on it. I'm putting in new floor panels at the moment and
learning new tricks like MIG welding.

Also, could someone give me the dimensions for the template that gives
the position for the hole in the wing ( fender, I think to you) for the
antenna. The template is shown in position on the CCI cdrom but not the
dimensions so its not much good.

Thanks to you all

I have a question concerning the padded dash on 1956 Chevrolets. I know
they were available on the BelAir models, but were they available on 210
models (or even 150 models)? If they were, was the retaining trim
different
from model to model? I have the end caps and I'm contemplating putting an
original padded dash in my '56 210, but I want to make sure I have the
correct retaining trim.
Another thing.. I have a nice sized list of used '55-'57 Chevy parts to

I'll email back the list that I have. I do have some harder-to-find items.

Has anyone had experience of using walnut shells to remove paint?

Also I have been told that it is a good idea to get a late model Chevy
truck four wheel drive flywheel cover that bolts on to transmission. I was
told that it is cast aluminum and is much stronger and it gives
the transmission more strength. Does anyone know if that is true?

front pad is stamped F212EB and the dates are B-11-7, the motor is
all new with less than 8 hours on it, only coming in and out of the
trailer. It is a correct motor in every way and would make a great set

Chris,
There is a place in Texas called Big Jim's (phone # 254-694-5830) that
sells reproduction outside sunvisors, fender skirts, and all that stuff.
Visit their website at http://www.BigJims.net and you'll see pictures and
descriptions of the items they sell. They do have 3 types of repro '55-'57

Chevy outside visors in heavy gauge fiberglass, with the stainless trim.
The
original visors were all metal, but these look exactly original and they
sell
for $229. Or you can find a used visor and expect to shell out around
$250-$400 for one. I was fortunate enough to find a decent used one for my

wagon for $200, but it did need a little metal work under the stainless
trim.
Check out Big Jim's!

Hi Bob,
I'd like to let everyone on the list from the Baltimore-D.C. area
know that the bi-annual Lost In The '50s Custom Car Club swap meet/flea
market will be held on Sat., April 22nd. The address is 2301 Dorsey Rd.,
Glen Burnie, MD. 21061. Time-9 AM-1 PM. The cost for those wishing to
sell parts is $10 per slot for a double-long space. There will be no
charge for any club wishing to sell raffle tickets for a charitable
cause. All money collected is donated to LITF charities. It's rain or
shine.
The swap meet is open to anyone with anything to sell but it's been
mostly car parts in the past. Everything from fuzzy dice and dummy
spotlights to engines, body sheet metal, and tires and wheels. (I did
pick up an antique drafting set last fall for $10.) For more info,
e-mail me direct.
Thanks again, Bob. Your list seems to be growing at a rapid rate. I

To Mike Windsor, Parker CO.

It sounds like you have a very nice original car. I'm assuming it is a 2
door
hardtop. That being the case, your car is worth closer to $20,000 than
$29,000. Fresh frame-up restorations with everything new are going for
$25,000
to $32,000. Those cars are completely taken apart, totally rebuilt and
reassembled as new. This usually takes about 700 to 1,000 hours to do. As
you
can see, the value of a restoration (done correctly, with all matching
numbers)
is definitely worth more than an original well taken care of car, who
wouldn't
want everything new. I've had six 57 hardtops and I judge in the restored
class and I appraise cars, so you might say I know a little about values.
I
hope this helps you in marketing your car, it sounds very nice.

Good luck.
Billy Klingman
414-964-3451 WI

p.s.- Consider putting it on the internet at Central Valley Classics in
CA.; by
the way, offer it to the Dealers that say it is worth $55,000 to $60,000...
they'll think it's a deal at $45,000!!

Editor's note. Thanks for the posting Billy. We all learned something.
Price wise is
a convertible the most expensive followed by the Nomad and then a 2 door
hardtop?

A couple weeks ago, I sent a message about Classic Chevys of San Diego
being left off of the CCI list of "Local Chapters". Since then, I have
heard of several other clubs that were left off of the list. I have talked
to CCI about this and here is what they told me.

It seems as though there is a "Yearly Registration" form included with the
insurance package that must be filled out and returned by October 31, even
if you don't take them up on their insurance offer. It is very confusing
because the form is buried in the middle of the insurance forms and if you
don't understand their process, you probably won't realize you need to send
in the registration form. Our club did not send in the form until
November, which is when our elections are held and I was told that this was
too late to make the list. I would like to hear from any other club that
was left off of the CCI list of "Local Chapters" and the circumstances
surrounding it. I would also like to encourage those clubs to write to CCI
to express their concerns. Address the letter to Joe Whitaker, Vice
president of CCI.

I noticed a few 55 Chevys at car shows up here in New England with
foot

glass

Also, good news for 55 Nomad restorers out there! The February, 2000

are
coming soon, and fender and door trim may follow. These parts may be
