Bob, first of all, let me say that your List is the absolute BEST in every
regard! As a lover of the classic Chevy's, and of old iron in general, I
eagerly look forward to receiving the next edition, as often as you can
publish it. For the survey, I'm 44 years
old, own a 56 Nomad, and I am a Project Manager by profession. Our 15 year
old son claims that our 55 Sedan is his, and he's a student. Thanks again
for providing such a great service to the Chevy community.

Bob,

Another episode in the continuing saga of '55 follies (I am not a happy
camper!).

It is rather ironic that two weeks ago the president of our city council
asked me to come up with a list of all the streets that need to be repaved
in
the sixth ward in our town. Now I have an interesting little show and tell
(see attached image) to take to the meeting when I go in a couple of weeks
to
present my list.

It is too bad we cannot share images on here with the rest of the
recipients
of this list as I was wanting to ask them all if this is a common problem.

As you can see, the front lower cross frame member upon which the two lower
A
arms are bolted a giant tear in the metal has occurred at the front
junction
point. The tear runs back almost half way to the other side of the frame
member. Had it torn all the way, the entire assembly would have collapsed
and I guess I could have been killed if I was on the highway.

My question is this: is this kind of metal fatigue common? Is it caused
from the age of the metal or simply the result of the constant jarring this

part receives from all the pathetic streets around here? I have personally

never seen one of these parts damaged like this before and I was wondering
if
anybody else has?

I will be sending along two additional pictures. If anyone along the list
would wish to see this unusual tear I would send them the pictures and
would
certainly be glad to receive their observations.

The guy at the frame shop told me that it might take a while to fix this --

if it can be repaired at all. Might I have to remove the entire frame
member
and weld an entirely new one in its place?

I suppose he will tell me tomorrow when I go over there but I would
appreciate the ideas of list members.

All my best, as always,

David Scott Coker

Editor's note. I can not send pictures out on the list but from my
experience I have never seen
damage like you have except for repeated hard jars to the fame.

Bob your list is great and people still put ads in with no city or state or

phone number and a lot of times no price. I think if you tell these people
you need to do this or it will not make the list.......Then I think they
will
remember...LOL Great job on the List Bob. I have bought a couple of cars
off
you list and some of them were very hard to track down.......

Steve K.

Editor's note. The first rule of sales is "Make it easy for the buyer to
buy". On this list there is no
limit on how many words you can use to describe the thing you have for
sale. I recommend you
include the phone number, fax number, cell phone number, e-mail address,
your name, and any other way someone can contact the seller. When I see
an ad for something for sale WITHOUT a price, I always assume it is
overpriced. Do other list members feel the same way?

Chas' note- Got this from my good friend (and former Pittsburgh
radio personality) Blake Thunder.

A LITTLE HISTORY LESSON.......

Car nut that I am, I remember well the price of gas clear back to
the 60's. When the price of gas doubled and then some in 1978-
1980, the US Government had set limits on the price of gasoline.
But what seemed like a good idea at the time turned out to be
detrimental. Since the free market was not determining the price
of gasoline, it remained artificially high, even after the so-called
"shortage" of 1979 ended.

In 1981 the price controls came off. Gasoline peaked at an average
$1.38/gallon for regular 87-octane unleaded. Then it started to fall.
By the summer of '86 you could buy a gallon of gas for as little as
69 cents! Sure the prices went back up as the 80's ended (usually
due to new taxes), but it wasn't until the Gulf War that we saw
anything resembling $1.38/gallon. During the Gulf War, there was
an outcry for renewed price controls, but the Government wisely
stayed out of the way. People cut back on their driving...and the
price came down. Quickly. Throughout the '90's, gasoline prices
have stayed relatively stable, usually rising or falling based on the
time of year...the biggest bugaboo being new gasoline taxes,
although I must admit that the last gas tax hike of 5 cents here in
Pennsylvania has gone directly into road repair and construction..
making our roads much more pleasant to drive on.

The oil glut and 89 cent prices we saw last year wouldn't have
happened if it weren't for the free market being allowed to set the
price. Now OPEC is driving the price up...but history teaches us
that the OPEC countries don't stay united for long. It's likely that
sooner or later one or more of the oil-producing countries will
increase their production in an effort to increase their share of
the profits. When that happens, the price will fall. Participating
in this gas boycott may well help bring that day about. One thing's
for sure...nothing ventured, nothing gained. And other than repealing
gas taxes...something the Government needs to do, especially
on Diesel......the Government musn't interfere!!!

THAT SAID...WANNA GUESS WHAT $1.38 (the average price of
a gallon of gas in 1981), ADJUSTED FOR INFLATION, EQUALS
NOW?

$2.47! Before the extra taxes piled onto gasoline since '81!

Now, onto the message as passed onto me by Blake!

Please pass the word about this..............

As you may have heard, gas prices are skyrocketing beginning this
week(they are thinking around $2.00/gallon for premium here in
Columbus, OH), and speculation has it the price will not be going
down until the end of summer.

I will be planning on participating in the gas out mentioned below,
whether or not it works, we'll see. Anytime we can stick it to them
it's a good day. Last year on April 30,1999, a gas out was staged
across Canada and the U.S. to bring the price of gas down, and it
worked. It's time to do something about it again. This time, let's
make it for three days instead of just one. The oil cartel decided
to slow production to drive up gasoline prices. (Chas' note- UN
embargoes against some of the oil-producing nations have also
exacerbated the situation.) Lets see how many Canadian\American
people we can get to band together for a three day period in April,
NOT TO BUY ANY GASOLINE, during those three days. LET'S
HAVE A GAS OUT. Do not buy any gasoline from APRIL 7, 2000,
THROUGH APRIL 9, 2000. Buy what you need before the dates
listed above, or after, but try not to buy any during the GAS OUT.
If you want to help, just send this to everyone you know and ask
them to do the same.

We brought the prices down once before, and we can do it again!
Come on North America, lets stand together. WE CAN MAKE A
DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even if you receive this 100 times keep passing it around, this way
you know everyone is being informed and no one will forget!!!!!!!!

Bob, I enjoy reading the comments by many of your respondents. Just shows
how
the Classic Chevy generates so much passion. Why would GM make different
Crankshafts for different Trans? Doesn't make sense to me, GM didn't
install
the bronze bushing in the automatic crankshaft. After more than 40 years
almost any thing could be changed on these cars including the crankshaft.
Also , an alternative to the messy stripper is to use the razor blade, much

quicker & less mess. Also a whole lot cheaper. My '57 & my '62 Vette were
both done this way. If you want to try it hold the blade (in a holder) & at

about a 45 degree angle to the work. With a little practice you will see
how
quick & easy it will be. Don from SJCCC

Hi Bob, two things to note today
One- The fellow looking for the '55 Nomad exterior trim
needs to get in touch with Danny Howell of Late Great Chevys
fame. A week ago he told me he had a complete set.
Danny is a mailto:chevys55-72@ao.net

Two I hope to cruise Woodward Ave. in Aug. Although, my '55
runs well in all conditions, when asked to idle for any length of
time in hot weather, the ol' temp. soon climbs well above what
I like to see. I realize that there are numerous add-on auxiliary
electric fans available, but I want one that I can take off when
ever I want. The car is restored to original except for a 283. No
offence guys, but I don't like the looks of those fans on an
original car. Question: Has anyone out there bought or made up
such a fan that can be removed at will and leave no signs that
it was ever there?

Time to rock all the traditionalists boats again. Since my car was not
original when I purchased it, I am not worried about further modifying
it. I have a 56 4dr. wagon that I would like to add some niceties to.
The option that sounds most appealing to me is to cut off the front of
the frame and replace it with a Camero front "clip"? Forgive my
ignorance. As I understand it, this would improve my braking by giving
me front disc brakes, better suspension, and give me power steering
(after replacing the master cylinder and adding a booster). Am I way off
base? What I don't know is what year Camero front end works the best or
if there is another model that works better. Anybody have any
suggestions? Feel free to respond via Bob's fantastic site or directly

Bob, you probably would not like Dolly, because she doesn't like car shows.
There are a lot of shows in Pigeon Forge, TN, right outside Sevierville.
Both of these towns are near Gatlinburg and I'm sure most people have heard
of this resort town in the Smoky Mountains. Well 'Dollywood' is also in
Pigeon Forge and Dolly doesn't like all the crowds there when she decides
to
grace the people with her presents which is rare within itself. So she
tried to get all the shows stopped, but so far she has not succeeded.
Isn't
it strange what money will do to some people? But if you insist, I will
get
you a date with Dolly or her sister, 'someday' as soon as this engine is
sold. Thanks for getting the ad posted so quick and I hope
the sale is just as quick!! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK and always remember

Bob,
I also appreciate the effort and hard work that you put into this site.
About a month ago, I listed a new CARS,Inc. door panel kit for a 57 2 door
hardtop (minus the left door panel) for sale. A fellow from New Mexico
answered and wanted to buy them if they fit a 57 convertible. The catalog
shows the same part number for the 2 dr. hdtp and convertible, so I assume
they will fit. To make a short story long, he never got back with me, so I

still have the kit for sale. It is the original red/black style. If you
are
wondering why I have the kit minus the left door panel; well I messed it up

taking it off to repair a window regulator and CARS would not sell me a
single door panel, so I had to purchase the whole kit. I am asking $200.00

plus shipping for it.
I also have a reproduced set of dash bezels for the same car that were
never
installed.-$30.00 plus shipping. I am in the Austin ,TX area (512)251-7966

or email me.

Hi Bob,

I own a mint, original 55 hardtop with beige pattern cloth / red imitation
leather interior (Code # 521). I need to add seat belts for the safety of
my small children. So I order the original replacement product from
Danchuck. They arrive and, guess what? They do not match the interior
color at all. I contacted Snake Oyl, and they informed me that they do not
have any original belt material available, but they sent me some color
samples. None of them are satisfactory.

I need to speak to a person / company that has access to original seat
belts / seat belt material for my interior code #.

Can anybody help me???

Thank you,

I don't know if I already sent this to the list...I don't think so.
Anyway, the Post Office has an offering of stamps from each decade, from
the
20's to the '90's, I believe. The '50's series has TWO '57 Chevrolet's, one

is a Nascar Black Widow racing to the finish line, the other a rear fin
shot
of a blue '57. They're $4.95 each for 15 stamps in the set. Other stamps of

the '50s set includes Lucille Ball, Rocky Marciano, The Cat in the Hat, a
drive-in movie theater panorama, a space shot, and more.
The '60's series has a , ahem, classic Mustang convertible, the U.S.S.
Enterprise of Star Trek, the Beatles yellow submarine, Dr. Martin Luthor
King, a footprint on the moon, and others. Not a bad selection. They come
in
sealed packages. Just thought I'd mention it for those who might be
interested. I was hoping they'd have individual stamps of the '57 chevies,
but alas, it's not so, or I'd buy alot of them. Well, that's all , folks!
have a great week...
