For those interested in the Pat Chappell book, it's on eBay, #Item
#277634423. The book is definitely worth pursuing, as I did a couple of
years ago.

Don't delay bidding since it closes on March 13, at 17:19 PST. Last I saw
it was at $9.00, but it will likely sell much higher. I had to pay over
$50 for mine, from a rare book dealer.

Good luck!

Bob, this is your agent again still working on your date with "DOLLY'. I
now have digital pictures (attached) of the 57 'power pac' engine and
transmission. This engine is one of the nicest, original stock engines
that I have ever seen. The only thing that does not have original factory
paint are the exhaust manifolds and valve covers that were repainted when
they were removed to replace the gaskets that were leaking. If anyone has
a need for a excellent 283 power pac engine, code 'FC', please email for
pictures or call me. Help me sell these parts before my wife runs me off;
she can't get her car in the garage. Thanks again and always remember

Bob,
Can anyone tell me what color the wheel rims were painted on a '57 Chevy
two
tone when hub caps (not wheel covers) were ordered? Were they painted the
same as the top of the car, or the bottom of the vehicle, or did the buyer
make the choice?
Thanks in advance for the feedback.

I heard a discussion recently about our cars that I would like your
comments about. If you were going to install disk brakes on a 57, is it
better to get 15 inch disk brake wheels and use a tire that has a small
height or use 14 inch disk brake wheels with standard height tires?

With respect to the question of whether or not any '55-'56-'57 Chevy's came
without a back seat, I can definitely say the answer is "yes". The 2-door
"150"
series (not the "210") was available as a "business sedan" (ie: no back
seat).
The price was slightly less than the regular "150" 2-door with the back
seat.
The local police department (Smithtown, L.I., New York) still had a couple
in
service when I was a teenager back there in the late 1950's.

I believe (as a result of my subsequent employment by GM's Fisher Body
Division
Central Office as a GMI student) that these "business sedans" remained in
the
full-size chevy line-up through about 1961 or 1962.

Hi Bob,

I'm still working on the V8 for my 6-cylinder 57 Chevy, and I was wondering

if anyone on "The List" could give me a little more help.

I'm building a set of 3-deuces for the 350 engine, and I'd like to get the
vintage Offy cast aluminum manifold polished and clear powder-coated. I
was
wondering if anyone out there knew of a place that could do a great job of
polishing it. If they also do powder-coating, that's a plus, but I can
always get that done separately.

I just have one final question for Bob. I was wondering how many hours a
week you spend on assembling and distributing The List. You do a great
job,
and it certainly is a valuable service to all of us.

Editor's note. If you would ask my wife, she would say too many hours.

List Members,
A while back some of you were talking about a title company in Alabama
who can give a title for a car when the original title cannot be
located. Can anyone give me some more info on this procedure and the
name and phone number of the company? Do you have to be the original
owner of the vehicle? Is this a legitimate transaction? I tried to
locate this type of service in Hemmings but could not. Also what is
cost? Any info would be a great help. Thank you. Donna

Hello Bob!

In answer to your question about the value of a 2-door hardtop. The 2 door
hardtop is not that close to a convertible in price. A #1 fresh frame-off
numbers matching concourse platinum convertible is in the $50,000 to
$65,000
range, depending on running gear. The hardtop in comparable shape is
$27,000
to $32,000. Why the difference in the prices you ask..... if you could
have
any style of 55, 56, or 57 Chevy and price was no object, what would it be?
I
already know your answer! When the top goes down, the price goes up, and
that's my final answer!!!

Billy Klingman

Editor's note. I have seen fliers at swap meets the claim they can take a
2 door hardtop
and make a convertible. Has anyone heard of this being done?

This is for the members who are in the "gas discussion":
(Bob thanks for the work and sorry for using so much space)
Living in Germany I hope I can give some facts and opinion to the
discussion about fuel-prices in USA/Europe: The comparison is a little
difficult because of the different currencies and the different
measuring systems. So may be some examples will help compared to other
daily stuff (I converted it to Dollars):
average net income of a married postman = 1500.00
milk (one quart) = .50
flight Germany>US-Eastcoast and back = 350.00
cigarette (one) = .12
yoghurt (five oz.) = .15
quality engine oil (one quart) = 4.50
car insurance (VW Golf, one year) = 200.00
car insurance (V8-car, one year) = 1000.00
car tax (per cubicinch, per year) = 1.60
car tax (no catalytic converter, per cubicinch, per year) = 3.50
beer (can) = .30
watching a movie = 6.00
electricity (per kilowatt/hour) = .15
gas (one gallon) = 3.75 (much more expansive in Skandinavia)
What are we talking about, business or hobby? Driving to the plant, the
shop or the office for working, it's moving from "A" to "B" at the
cheapest way. In Germany we have rather high gas prices since ever (I
can think), so it was always a question of driving cars, that don't use
a lot of this valuable fluid. Although your country is first in a lot of
things, I think we had this problem before you. In the seventies they
announced boycotts, made "car-free" Sundays and some other funny things
and nothing changed. If you have the oil, you make the price. Each
consument has to arrange in his own special way. And this can be f.e
riding carpool, bus or train, like a lot of people do it. Normaly.
The difference comes when it's weekend and we're sliding in our "time
machines". Is it normal to put 20.000 Dollars in a car that once cost
2.000 bucks? Driving to a car show (not in the neighbourhood but where
you stay overnight) cost me about $ 200.00 of gas. Collecting stamps
would be much cheaper, but otherwise . . .
In Germany they are building cars now, that run 60 miles per gallon.
Driving a 55 BelAir or even an "every day" Camaro means a kind of outlaw
or rather crazy to the average man on the street. You guess the answer,
when I'm crying about the gas prices?
I wish you good success for the gas boycott days but I have the same
opinion like the other list member. It won't change nothing because the
consume doesn't go back. If your tank is empty you'll fill it up today
and protest tomorrow. Put our gas guzzlers in the garage for a year and
only use Daihatsu 3 Cyl. cars for the way to work, close Disneyland and
Las Vegas then - may be - it will move something. BUT WHO IN THIS LIST
REALLY WANTS TO DO THIS?
Take care!
Greetings from lucky(?) Europe
Dieter

Bob- Richard Simmons sent a list of 31 things we may remember. Please
forgive any typos on this as it is dark inside my coffin:

#6 - Milk Bottles - how about ones with 2" of cream in the neck?
Pre-homogenized.

#8 - Movies - Saturday AM $.10 got you 6 cartoons, a Buck Rogers serial
and a Roy Rogers or Gene Autry western. Popcorn extra.

#11 - phone #'s - how about 4 numbers only? My home phone in Ogden,
Utah in the 40's was 4206.

#24 - Studebaker? how about Nash - Hudson - Packard - Kaiser - Frazer
- al were post WW2

#28 - You got me! I don't know what Lawson's is. But do remember
finding pop bottles for 2 cents each for #8 above.

#29 - McDonalds - how about before McDonalds?

#30 - I recall gas wars in the early 50's when I began to drive as low
as 18.9 cents per gallon. Tax was about 2 or 3 cents of that - today
(in Utah) tax is over 44 cents per gallon.

No flowers please -

On the 8th day HE created the 55 Chevrolet
(and GMC Suburban Pickups)

Editor's note. Anyone on this list remember a Crosley? I saw a picture
where someone put a Crosley in the back of a Ford Excurssion.

Hi Bob
I've gotten the message about the Great American Gas-Out at least a
dozen times in the past week or so. I'll participate but I don't think
it will have a very long-lasting effect. Everybody will have to buy gas
after the protest, won't they? And won't they have to buy a little more
since they didn't buy any during the 'gas-out'?
What would really drop the price of gasoline would be a four day, ten
hour a day, work week for all businesses that could convert to that
format. Construction workers, repair shops, many small offices, etc.
could convert to a 4-10s week. It's been proven that more work gets done
with a 4-10 week plus we'd have the added benefit of a 3 day weekend.
Each person that works a 4-10 week would reduce their commuting fuel
consumption by 20%! Imagine that! More work done, the same pay, a 3 day
weekend, and using 20% less fuel! Whatta ya think?
One other thing while I'm here. I'm going to give Hemmings Motor News
a plug. I don't work for them, (I'm retired from the construction
business), but I use their publication nearly every day. I use it to
help other people find parts for the cars they are restoring. Cliff
Waldron, a contributor to this list, advertises in Hemmings. It's known
as the 'bible' of the collector car hobby. The March issue has over 75
Tri-5s listed for sale, many with pictures. There are also over 200 ads
in the Tri-5 section for parts and literature. At $4.95 it's a bargain.
A yearly subscription, (in the US), is $26.95 or about $2.25 an issue.
That's a REAL bargain! I'm still surprised at how many people in this
great hobby have never heard of Hemmings Motor News. You can check them
out at www.hemmings.com If you need it for your car, you'll probably
find it in Hemmings. Thanks for the soap-box, Bob! Wild Bill

Hi Bob! Many thanks for all your hard work on the list.
I am looking for an original ac/heater unit for my 57 Chevy. It is an
original ac car with the under dash vents, ac controls etc. When I bought
the
car the person told me that the unit was in the trunk. Well, guess what?
The
guy spoke with forked tongue. I got the car off of the transport and the
unit
was mysteriously missing. He claims it was in there when he loaded it but
I've used this transporter for years without one problem and the driver is
as
honest as they come.

If anybody out there has a unit for sale or knows of one I would sincerely
appreciate an Email from you to Branlen@aol.com. Also if anybody knows of
an
alternate solution for this. The car is going to be a "driver" so if it's
not
100% original that would be just fine.
I'm also looking for the exterior windshield vertical stainless for a 57
convertible.
Thanks in advance for any help. Leonard
