I say a survey recently about buying new cars that really hit home with me.
I am looking for a new
car now. It said that 78 percent of all new car buyers would pay up to
$300 more not to have to
haggle about the price of a car purchase. That $300 became $500 if the
survey only included
women.

What a terrible indictment of car dealers. How could they pass up $300 to
$500 additional profit
per car sale by not having fixed prices? If anyone in the car industry is
on this list, please respond
to this. I think we would all like to know why car dealers (except Saturn)
don't have fixed prices.

Also, today in the LA Times, is a great article on how to buy cars and NOT
deal with a car dealer.
I checked out www.carsdirect.com. It is a great way to buy a car. I never
have to talk to a car
dealer. I tell carsdirect.com what I want and they give me a price. It
is that simple.

They are going to get my business soon.

You have been holding out on us. If you know about filaments, cathodes and
anodes, you must
have a good knowledge of electronics.

Norm

Editors note. My knowledge of electronics is from the 50s when I was
interested in it. Because
of the rapid change in technology, that knowledge is now about as useful as
the knowledge of
how to repair a Yugo transmission.

Hi Bob.
We continue to love your newsletter. Can we list a few "leftovers" we want

to sell?
1) We have a 1955 Chev V8 265 rebuildable engine core; water pump 3782608;

intake 3711348-D115; block 3703524-A285; one head 3703523-E245; one head
3703523-G85.
We will take $600. It would save shipping if someone in the northwest was
to
buy it so it could be personally picked up or delivered.
2) Clock from a Canadian '56 Chev. It works. Wind-up, not electric.
Looks
good.
3) '57 Chev intake and carburetor 3731398, J 296 new reproduction
Rochester
carburetor with 200 miles on it. Manifold is "tanked" and painted Chev
orange. $160.
4) Set of four 55-57 Chev pickup hubcaps. New, still in boxes. $95.
Please send questions to YakimaJan@aol.com or to Rocketwgn@aol.com.
(You're
likely to get a quicker answer if you send to YakimaJan). We can email
photos of the items.

Thanks Bob.

I have a motor in my 57 FI convert with # F320GC on the block. Is there
any extra value, and how do I tell if the tranny is turbo glide. It
doesn't drive yet, but the guy I bought it from said it was "special"
for the Fuelie. The frame, motor, trans, fuel inj, are all restored. I
might sell all that and have a corvette chassis built for it-I want more
of a street rod. Am looking for a value. Sorry if that offends anyone,
it isn't matching numbers if that helps.
Thanks for any help.

Editor's note. If the far right of the transmission gear selector has HR
or GR it is a Turboglide. If it is R, it is a Powerglide. If it is
something else, you have a replacement transmission.

This is a partial answer to Ken about his six speed swap in his 55 chev.
There are several difficult problems to overcome. Here is a part of that
list and some solutions

1. using your own clutch and brake pedals
a. Contact Sallee Chev (Internet) in the N. W. as they have
developed special parts for this swap

2. special cross member
a. A company exists that makes a special member, I believe
the trans sits on an angle, again Sallee Chev

3. shifter handle
a. either use bench seats or cut a notch in your own bench
seat as the shift sits back about 5 inches additionally

4. Use of a slave cylinder to actuate throw out bearing
a. Once more Sallee Chev has developed a part that will
enable you to use your same clutch and brake pedal
set up with out the slave cylinder

5. Drive s haft length
a. Take very good measurements to a drive shaft shop and
have your old one shortened or a new one made

6. 2nd speed lockout
a. You got me on that one, I do not know of that problem

7. A magazine article exists on this very swap, but I cannot
think of it, but I will look for it

Lastly, the folks at Sallee Chev have done a lot of ground work on this and
will bend over backward to help you. If you have not yet purchased the
trans, the Richmond 6 speed will be a much easier installation.

Good Luck

Mark,

My family used to go from L.A. area (700') to Mammoth
Mountain (9,000'-10,000') each summer for vacation. The
car will run richer at that elevation, but not enough to
warrant adjusting the carb unless you are there for a
long time. The biggest problem was starting, it would
flood big time if you were not careful. Knowing this,
we never had a problem. My dad did help a lot of people
who couldn't get their cars started. The temperature
will have and effect as well, flooding in the early
morning was more prevalent. Your power will be down big
time also. I remember on one trip we filled up the 65
Pontiac and headed up to close to 12,000' and it was hot
(90ish) and the sun shining on us, you could hear the
gas in the tank boil.

Have fun on your trip,

Jack

Hi Bob-

Just commenting on Ken Sturgill's e-mail. I'd be very interested as to how
well the six speed swaps into a tri five.
I'm running the same M-21/327 set up in my 57 and would like to do the same
swap. Does anyone know if there is a conversion kit? Or has anyone else
already performed this swap?

Later all...

There is a 57 hardtop on ebay that is selling at no reserve that looks to
be
a decent car for somebody. I cannot afford it myself right now or I would
try
to buy it. I email the seller and he says the last bidder will own it. I
read
your list and some of the prices of cars listed and this may sell
reasonably
priced, just thought I would pass this along. The eBay item is #
1836364371.
Let me know if any of you buy it.

Hi Bob & All You Tri-5ers,
This is a little off the usual Tri-5 talk but maybe someone on the list
can answer one, some, or all of these questions for me. I have recently
started watching NASCAR racing again after many years away from the sport.
Here goes.
#1-Why, when almost all cars now have front wheel drive, does NASCAR still
insist on rear wheel drive? There is a lot of racing around the world with
front wheel drive cars and they reach some pretty high speeds. Why doesn't
NASCAR go "front-wheel-driving"?
#2-Why does NASCAR mandate carburetors when all cars now come with fuel
injection. That seems more like regression than progress to me. For years
Detroit incorporated racing innovations from NASCAR ,(and the NHRA). Now
the cars are almost the same year after year and NASCAR has even gone so
far as to say how fast the cars can go. I think the restrictor plates are a
joke.
#3-Recently I happened to see part of a show about NASCAR. They were
interviewing a driver and he was showing the fans his Chevy. Then he said,
(I THINK!), that all the cars use a Ford 9" rear? Is that right?
I guess you all can tell I'm not too thrilled with NASCAR. It is still
interesting to watch but I can't "get into it" like I once did. If anyone
can answer my questions I'd really appreciate it. I asked the questions at
the NASCAR site on the SPEED channel and didn't get a reply to any of them.
Thanks again for your forum, Bob. Wild Bill

Someone told me at our last car club meetings that Ed Cole who designed our
TriFives later became the president of GM, he largest car company and then
after GM he became president of the smallest car company. Could that be
true? He must have taken a very large cut in pay it that is true.

Randy

Editor's note. Can't tell you about pay but I think Ed Cole went from
being president of GM to being president of Checker. Hope that is
correct.

Greetings to Bob and "Stephen@starkfilms.com"

What a pleasure to hear that one of the Chevy List readers had an
opportunity
to see Brian Wilson 'live' in London. As a friend of Brian and the group
for
thirty-nine years, and a former manager of "America's Band," I can tell you

that BW is not only alive and well, but--like a fine wine--is improving
with
age!

When The Beach Boys started in Hawthorne, California in December 1961, they

were merely another LA surfing band. Some might even say a 'garage' band.
Brian's incredible God-given talent for melodies, arrangements, harmonies
and
production soon transformed music as we now know it. Like Buddy Holly, he
was
far, far ahead of his time. It is little wonder that his classic album,
"Pet
Sounds," was recently voted the #2 rock album of all-time, and the highest
ranking American album.

Have contributed to seven books, a TV movie and two specials on Brian and
the
group, I can tell you that in many respects little changed over the first
twenty-two years of the band's evolution. Brian was the 'soul' of the
group,
Carl, the 'compassion,' Dennis, the 'spirit,' Mike, the 'cheerleader,' and
Alan, the loyal 'friend.'

However, when Denny passed away tragically in a 1983 swimming accident,
followed by the equally tragic passing of Carl--from cancer--in 1998, in
many
ways, The Beach Boys--the band we all grew up with, disappeared forever.

However, the music--Brian's music--has remained a living legacy to the his
and the group's timeless influence.

Unlike Mike and Denny, who really thrived on the 'roar of the crowd,' Brian

never really needed, nor wanted, the public adulation. He was the
'introvert'
in an industry that seems to abound with extroverts! His only real
'passion'
was--and remains--the music.

I have seen Brian each summer for the past three years, and, each summer,
he
gets better and better. His voice--while not quite the tone and excitement
of
a twenty year old--improves each time I see him. And, perhaps, even more
important, his confidence on stage has increased substantially.

Brian embraces each audience with the sheer genius of his music. The
memories
they revive in all of us is a testament to their longevity, timelessness
and
creativity. His melodies are his special gift to each of us. "I share my
love
through my music," Brian once told me.

I was not around to meet or work with Stephen Foster, Irving Berlin, Cole
Porter, or Rogers and Hammerstein. I rode the carousel, grabbed the 'gold
ring' and ended up fortunate enough to hang out and work with my musical
idol, Brian Wilson. Like all of you, I'm profoundly thankful.

What major rock and roll star of the 50s got a degree from Columbia
University AFTER he became a major star?

is that correct?
