Sid,

You can pack small dia rope down the plug hole into the cylinder, as much
as
you can. Be sure to leave some sticking out of the hole to pull it back
out
with. Then turn the engine by hand toward TDC to pack the rope tight.
This
will hold the valve up. When you are done, turn the engine the other way
to
loosen the rope and pull it out the plug hole. hope this helps.

Hi Bob-
This is in regard to the horn problem. When we got our 56 Bel Air 4 dr
sedan 20 years ago from a little ol lady, we noticed there was electrical
tape holding the thin horn ring together. Figured someone had really
mashed
down on it in a fit of terror and snapped it. (But now maybe think it was
snapped because it developed the bad contact problem and figured more
pressure would get it to blow.) At any rate, we also noticed a nice big
round button that is surface mounted on the lower curve of the left side
dash. Yes, it's the horn button and it always works. We're now restoring
the car, so the seat is out, but now that I think of it, you could probably
blow that horn button with your left knee. So just reroute the wiring and
there's no reason to be without a horn.
As always, thanks for the list Bob.

Hi everyone-
I'm sending this email out in an effort to spark some interest in some sort
of special celebrations for the 50th Anniversaries of the '55, '56 & '57
Chevys coming up in 2005, 2006 and 2007. At this early date, I'm proposing
that we owners have some sort of Worldwide event on a specific date in each
of those years. Perhaps a gathering in each of the major cities and towns
across the globe. For example, for 2005, we could have a strictly 1955
Chevrolet Car Show here in the Los Angeles area, perhaps on the original
introduction date in September or October. No trophies or judging, just a
gathering of '55 Chevys and their dedicated owners all in one place here in
town.

The same could be done in 2006 and 2007 for the '56 and '57 Chevys,
respectively. Perhaps CCI and/or Bow Tie Chevys can help organize these
events, as a joint effort or separately in different localities. Other
companies could join in too, like Danchuk and Hemming's Motor News.

Anyway, just a thought. Please send me or Bob Ford your ideas.

I just purchased a 1984 jeep that is not running.
The lady I bought it from thinks her x-husband put
sugar in the gas tank. I have asked several friends
(not mechanics) what happens when sugar is put in the
tank and I have answers running from- it destroys the
engine, to, nothing at all as gas will not dissolve
the sugar and it just settles to the bottom of the
tank. I do not want to start making repairs that are
not needed but I do not want to do any further damage
if the sugar does in fact cause engine damage. What
should I expect, how can I determine if their is sugar
in the gas, and how can I get rid of it! Any help
will be appreciated.

Dear Bob,

As a follow-up to the PCV discussion now brewing, perhaps you could ask
list members about the necessity for valve cover breathers. My engine
already has a PCV valve and an oil filler spout in the front of the
intake where I could put a breather instead of a cap. Do I still need
valve cover breathers? I have a nice set of those new aluminum BB Chevy
valve covers and would like not to have to drill holes in them.

Hello Bob, Happy New year to You and the list members.

To answer McGillis question, The 3rd members are not interchangeable
between the 55-64 passenger car and the 55-59 pickups.

As per the member on the 57 temp senders, Yes, They are bad. I have
recently
sent a whole bunch back to Standard and Echlin. I have tried many different

brands and they all have been faulty. At this time, Standard cannot say for

sure when they will run a new supply. I have suggested to them to make them

in America again.

Bob:

I read some of the posts on the PCV, and here's my two-cents' worth:

1. As far as being standard on California cars, my answer would be "no" as
I am the second owner of my 1957 Bel Air with a 6 cyl. 3 spd transmission.
It was originally built in Oakland, sold in San Francisco (Les Vogel
Chevrolet)and we bought it from the original owner in 1978 with 28,195
miles
on it.

Because the car was less than 25 years old at the time, in order to
transfer
the title it had to pass a smog test. The meant the installation of a PCV
valve. The cars did not have one, so I can attest that it did not come
with
one from either the factory or the dealer. We had one installed (an AC
Delco) so that it would pass the smog test, which it did.

2. As far as being good for the car, all I know is that the car ran like
crap as soon as we installed the PCV. We took the car to DMV; it passed
the
smog test, we disconnected the PCV, and it has run fine ever since. (Now
it
has 38,000 original miles on it!)

Hope this helps!

Bryan Mion
bmion@iglide.net

Editor's note. I have a friend that has a 57 Nomad that he likes to drive
and show. He normally has an Edelbrock carb on it when he drives it and he
puts the factory carb on when he shows it. There is a lot of difference
between the 2 carbs. With the Edelbrock there is never any hesitation when
you step on the accelerator pedal. The acceleration is smooth when the
weather is cold or hot.

This is a way to replace valve springs with the head still on the engine;
feed a rope into the cylinder through the spark plug hole. turn crank by
hand to snug up the rope to the valves( when the piston moves up the
cylinder ) use a spring removal pry bar to release the spring keepers,
replace new spring the same way, release tension on rope, pull out of hole,
you're done!

Hi Bob
This list is great! I am still building my 55 Delivery and through

I was able to get some 210 wagon stainless to help dress it up. I wondered
if any one has the bearing numbers
(inner and outer) to put midsize GM rotors on the original spindles. It
would
be even easier if I knew what car these bearings fit. Thanks Jack Welsh

Tried to send it to Sidchev5567@aol.com but it would not go. So, here it
is.
Remove the spark plug, put the cylinder on TDC and fill the chamber with
thin clothesline. This will hold them close enough to change va;lvesprings
- we used to do it that way at the track.

Hi Bob,
Happy New Year from Crabtown, (Baltimore), to Bob and all list members!
Here's another story of the blaring horn. This one is on my '55 Delray
like Ed Malinski's.
Two summers ago I was heading west on I-70 here in Md. in my '55. A Md.
State Trooper pulled up alongside and gave me a quick toot and the old
"thumbs up". As he started to accelerate past me my horn honked. He slowed
down, gave me a little smile, (guess he thought I was returning his
original toot!) and started away again. This time the horn began a rapid
beep-beep-beep! He slowed again and I just shrugged my shoulders as the
horn kept beeping, sometimes a quick beep-beep, other times a long
beeeeeep. I guess he thought I was trying to be funny and he turned on his
lights and motioned me to pull over. He checked my license and registration
and asked why I kept blowing the horn. I told him it wasn't me, that there
must be a short somewhere. I disconnected the horn right then and there and
haven't hooked it up since.
I've heard similar horn stories before this and, so far, I haven't heard
any solutions. Anyone here know how to fix this? Do you have to replace the
wire in the steering column? Thanks from all of us with beeping horns if
you know the answer to this problem. Wild Bill

Editor's note. Bill, I can still taste those soft shell crabs I ate at
Baltimore and Annapolis in the late 50s. Talk about great eating.

Someone asked if the center section of the rear end in a '55-'57 1/2-Ton
Chevy truck is the same as the center section of the '55-'57 Chevy Pass Car

rear end. Most of my experience with these trucks is a number of years
back,
but my recollection is that the answer is a definite NO. I don't have any
references readily available to confirm, but I'm pretty confident on this
one.

Mr. Ford,

I also have a question someone on your e-mail list may be able to answer.

The 55 chevy 2 door HT I purchased has not one but two manufactures name
plates on the firewall. 1 on the left is from "General Motors of America"
as expected. There is also one on the left from "General Motors of France"
and all the data is in French.

The car was manufactured in Tarrytown, NY per the vendor code.

Has any one seen this before?

As far as changing valve springs with the head still on the car, and
without
using compressed air to hold the valves closed , I must confess I haven't
done it on a small-block Chevy. However, I did do this on two cylinders of
a
331 cubic-inch Caddy V8 many years ago when I was back in high school. It
should still work.

Rotate the engine so the affected cylinder is at or near bottom dead
center.
Remove the rocker arm shaft (or in the case of an engine like the Chevy,
the
appropriate rocker arms). Remove the spark plug from the appropriate cyl.
Start feeding clothesline or similar rope into the cyl. through the spark
plug hole. When you have fed in as much rope as you can, snip off the end
and
thread a spark plug back in the hole. Now, rotate the engine by hand so as
to
bring the piston in the appropriate cylinder up closer to the top of its'
stroke. This will compress the rope and hold the valves closed. Now, remove

the valve keepers and replace the spring or springs.

After you do this, take out the loosely-installed plug and fish out the
rope.
Reinstall the plug and go on to replace the springs on the next cyl.

If I had to replace ALL the springs, I think I'd most-likely pull the
head(s), but this trick worked fine for me when I just had a couple springs

to replace.

Good luck!

MOROSO MOTORSPORTS PARK

BRINGS THE BATTLE OF CHEVROLET BACK TO SOUTH FLORIDA

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL - If GM vehicles are your idyllic Moroso
Motorsports Park is the place for you during the annual Pepsi Chevy
Show, co-sponsored by Roger Dean Chevrolet, Split Image and Bud's
Chicken and Seafood, scheduled for March 8-9, 2003. This event continues
draw the largest crowd of the year for the South Florida track with an
average estimated attendance of 39,000. The two-day event features
1/4-mile Chevy drag racing, a Corvette Shootout, two Jet Dragsters, two
Jet Funny Cars, "Super Shockwave" Jet Truck, "Chevy Rebellion"
wheelstander, a Bikini Contest, Triple Xtreme Street Bike Freestyle
Stunt Team, as well as one of best Swap Meet and Manufactures'
Marketplace for Chevy parts and accessories in the state.

Again this year the Pepsi Chevy Show will feature the Street D.O.T.
10.5" tire class, which is a class for street driven Chevy's that just
happen to run in the 9-second range. Returning Champion Eric Kenwood of
Vero Beach will be on Moroso's 1/4 mile defending his 2001 title. Other
classes will include the Super Pro and Pro racers with vehicles that are
either Chevy powered, Chevy bodied or both. The 2001 Chevy Super Pro
Champion, Gary Unger, will ready to back up his title in his 8-second
Chevy.

Also competing on the drag strip will be Moroso's Quick 16 racers who
are in a yearlong battle for the point's championship. What a race this
promises to be as Moroso now allows motorcycles to help make up the
field of 16. Who will take the final win light on Saturday night - bike,
dragsters or doorcar?

The "Super Shockwave" Jet Truck, owned by Les Shockley, is a combination
of horsepower, Chromenoly and a fiberglass 1957 Chevy truck. "Super
Shockwave" is powered by two 12,000 horsepower Pratt & Whitney J-34-48
jet engines that used to power a US Navy T2-A Buckeye, but that's where
the resemblance ends. This truck body is pure 1957 Chevy and Shockley
cinched a Guinness Book of Records title driving 376 mph for the
standing mile at Paine Field in Everett, WA. The two Jet Funny Cars
owned by Mario Carranca of Arcadia, FL, "The Phantom" and "Super Mario"
will also be burning down the 1/4 mile. And the Jet Dragster duel is a
battle of west coast drivers. Michael Lugo of Irvine, CA will be
piloting "Pyromaniac" against fellow Californian Joe Douthit in
"California Smokey". Both dragsters have been over 300 mph and hour and
are working to see who can hit the highest number during the Pepsi Chevy
Show.

Off the track Roger Dean will host the competition in the paddock as
every variety of GM show vehicles line-up in Moroso's paddock for all to
admire. With classes for every make, model and year, cars and trucks
from all walks of life will attempt to take home the choice awards. With
editors on hand from CHEVY HIGH PERFORMANCE, to pick and choose
"Editor's Choice", it will be Chevy Heaven. "Club Participation", "Best
of Show", "Best Interior", and "Best Paint" name just a few of the
specialty awards that will be given out over the weekend.

Moroso will host an Open Test Day on the drag strip on Friday from
8am-4pm. Testing will be $150 per car. Test & Tune will be open on
Friday, March 7th from 5pm-11pm for all Chevy Show participants who
purchase a weekend racing ticket. Spectator weekend passes are $50 on
Friday, or if you're just in for the practice session a spectator ticket
for Friday only is $15. All tickets include free parking and pit pass.
Buy your discounted spectator tickets at any Bud's Chicken & Seafood
restaurants and get $3 off a one-day spectator ticket and receive a FREE
2-liter of Pepsi.

On Saturday, March 8th, the gates open at 9a.m., Quick 16 Qualifying is
at 1pm and 3pm and the elimination's for Quick 16 begin at 6pm. Jets run
at 5p.m. and 8:30p.m, and the BIKINI CONTEST is at 7 p.m. Saturday night
on the main stage. Gates will open at 9 a.m. on Sunday with
elimination's at 11:30a.m. and the Jets will run at 1:30p.m. and
