Years ago I remember seeing, at a classic show, either a horn or electronic
device (that many years ago it couldn't have been TOO electronic!) that
played "See the USA in your Chevrolet".
Many hours on the Internet have yielded nothing.
Does anyone know where to get one of these devices?
Thanks,

Yes, John, I have already put my request in for Petitions. I hope all of
you will do the same so we can get this new illegal Tax increase stopped as
soon as possible. The Governor and the Finance Committee cannot change the
tax fees like this. It should have been voted on by the State Legislature.
The Governor just figures it will take too long for us to fight this,
meanwhile they can steal this money from our wallets. Much like that
illegal out-of-State transfer fee that was overturned in the Courts after a
several year Court battle. Keep the faith and sign those Petitions! -Jerry

Dear Bob,

Please post this for your readers: After 22 years, Chuck Smith Performance
Services has moved from Calabasas, CA to Valley Center, CA. Sadly, we will
no longer be doing frame-off restorations of those wonderful 55-57
Chevrolets & Corvettes. However, we will still be restoring carburetors,
fuel injection
units and have reproduction parts to sell. Chuck Smith moved to the San
Fernando Valley in 1943, so leaving the LA area (and many friends) to go to
the San Diego area was a major move for him. But! We have learned that
this area has lots of great classic cars (and people) and great cruise
nights in Escondido and other nearby communities. And Chuck finally has
his
own flamed,1957 Sierra Gold Bel Air Hardtop ready to show! Our new phone
number is 760-749-5755 and our fax is 760-749-5355. Thanks and keep up the
needed sharing of information that you offer on your site. Happy cruising
from the Smiths!

Hi Bob,

We are planning an extended road trip (4 weeks) to Canada this summer and
will be driving our '56 Chevy. We are thinking of adding air bags to help
make
the ride smoother. Just wanted to check with your readers, before going to
the
expense, if anyone has added air bags to their Tri-Chevy and if so; what
make
did they install and what experience have they had. We would very much
appreciate any response to our questions. Thank you.

This is in response to the roll call request. My son has a 57 Bel Air sedan
2 door. The license plate(Michigan) reads YEL AIR due to the car being PPG
Prowler yellow and having a home fabricated ram air induction system. The
car was a complete ground up build of a very decent original Nevada car. It
has a Dodge Dakota front frame clip grafted to the original 57 1 piece
frame. This provides 11 1/2 in disc brakes and power rack and pinion
steering. The car rolls on Goodyear eagles with polished 16 inch torque
thrust wheels. The engine is a GM performance parts 502/502 with some
additional mods and dyno's at 572 HP. The trans is a 700R4 (I use this as
the fuse to keep him under control) and the rear end is a 9 inch MOSER
Engineering unit with 3.70 gears and disc brakes. The interior is gray
leather and tweed and uses front and rear seats from a 2001 Buick park
avenue, custom headliner, door panels, billet aluminum dash and restored
original gages round out the interior. All exterior trim has either been
rechromed, polished and/or replaced.
The car was driven on the 2001 HOT ROD power tour and has been on HOT ROD
TV
as well as in the magazine. When we were building the car Andrew did a
great
deal of the design and fabrication work on the car, what he didn't realize
was he was building his high school graduation present. The car runs very
strong yet still gets 18mpg cruising down the freeway. Other projects we
have yet to finish are 2 1964 Fairlane 427 Thunderbolt clone cars, a 62
Chevy 409/425 4 spd bubbletop, a 57 Chevy 350 TPI big back window pickup
and
a recently purchased 64 ply moth 413 4spd car.
We appreciate your efforts on the lists.

Greetings Bob and the 55,56, and 57 group,

I have been reading the interesting posts to this group for
quite some time. Have even commented on a few occasions.
Was able to find the hard to come by lower steering wheel
cover and purchase from another member of the group.
Thanks Bob for bringing this letter about. I really enjoy the
enthusiasm and interest in these cars as found here! Thanks
also to all the members that make this letter informative and
interesting.

My name is Le Roy Evans. I live in Northern Wisconsin
in a small town named Poplar. We are about 25 miles from
Superior Wisconsin - Duluth MN (twin ports) on the Western
tip of Lake Superior. I am a Locomotive Engineer on the
Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad.

I have a '57 chevy 210 4dr that was being turned into a
Bel Aire clone. It currently has a 235 6cyl (with hair line crack
in the block), which will be replaced with a 327 or 350 small
block. Both are on engine stands so need to make a decision
soon. The 3 speed on the columb tranny will be replaced with
a Muncie 4 on the floor rock crusher w/hurst super shifter.
Exterior is currently black from the original coral and cream
from the cowl tag. The final color will be midnight blue metallic
with purple neon lighting underneath. Also considering flame-
thrower from dual exhaust.

I purchased the car a few years ago, and haven't done
much to it as of yet except to drive and enjoy. My friends
keep encouraging me to enter it in the car shows. I just
don't feel right doing this yet because it needs some cosmetic
and mechanical work done to it. When I see all of the finished
cars at the show, it just wouldn't do it justice to enter it along
side of the others.

When it's finished, I will have no problem entering it. It
doesn't look that bad, and is in really good shape. Small
cancer spots on front and rear fenders. Want to replace these
instead of having them repaired. Interior has black Cadillac seats
that need to be reupholstered. The final interior will be med grey
and royal blue. An overhead console from a Plymouth voyager with compass,
outside temp, storage compartments etc. is being added
to the headliner. Believe it or not it fits perfectly right down to the
roof line.

This is the year when I finally get to start working on it. Planned
update of brakes will start it off from 4 drum to front disc.

Wolfgang,

CLIFFS CLASSIC CHEVY'S http://www.cliffsclassicchevrolet.com/ fixed
my clock a while ago. If you want a good accurate clock that will last
a long time then you should get a Quartz replacement for yours as all of
the original Chevy clocks are pretty cheap clocks and not really made to
last a long time. I read someplace that as a last resort to spray WD-40
into the clock. I tried it on a '55 clock that just would not run and I did
not
want to spend any money trying to get it fixed so I tried it, AND IT NOW
WORKS!!
Also, I attach a toggle switch under the dash so I can switch off my
clock when I'm not using my car a lot. These old clocks have 2 points in
them that wears out and as I only use that clock for show I wanted a easy
way to shut it off.

Ok, I guess I'll add myself to the Roll Call (even though I don't
currently own a 55-57)

My name is Justin Hayes and I live in Dallas, Tx and work in Houston
(long story).

I grew up in southern California

I'm 29 yrs old, at least for a few more months anyway.

And like any good soon-to-be 30yr old, I have a wife, a couple of kids,
a big mortgage and a love for Chevys.

My first car was a '57 bel air 4dr post which I met my future wife in. I
loved the car, but always really wanted a 2dr HT.

Well, I let the 4dr go several years ago and have had several F-bodies
since.

Now I'm ready to get a 57 2dr HT again and the search is on.

I would like to put a fuel injected 350(LT1/LS1) or the RamJet 502 into
the 57 and use a 6-speed manual. Does anyone know if the ramjet502 crate
engine will fit under the hood?

I'm not looking for a completely finished car for two reasons... See:
"Big Mortgage", and most finished cars don't have the drive train setup
I'm looking for.

I know a finished car is cheaper in the long run, but I'm not in a
hurry, so a solid/restorable car without (or with) an engine would be
the perfect fit. I also want to build it my way, and not just buy
something someone else built

I've had my eye on collectorcartraderonline.com and ebay, and even had a
few good leads from this mailing list, but if any of you good people
know of a solid project out there, let me know.

I enjoy reading all your posts and thank you Bob for distributing this
list,

For John Fry and any other Tri-5ers thinking of switching to cable. I've
had my cable hook-up, with Comcast, for several years now. I've never
experienced any "slowing down" at peak hours. My brother has DSL and isn't
very pleased with it, probably because he's back in the Tennessee hills! He
actually has to have two separate dishes and often doesn't receive e-mails
for hours, sometimes days, after they're sent. One thing about the cable
modem is that your service isn't often interrupted by weather phenomena
unless there's a tree down across the above-ground fiber-optic cables like
we have here in my old neighborhood. The cable is really fast and I'm
pleased with it. The one or two times I've had trouble, Comcast's service
was excellent. Wild Bill

To John Fry,

Cable is, by far, better than D.S.L. The phone companies won't tell you
that, though. As I write
this my connection is 2.6 Megabits/second. It has been as fast as 3.5
Megs. So, you see, there IS
some speed drop as more people use the cable. But, even at it's slowest
(for me 1.5 Megs) it's
WAY ahead of D.S.L.

To do your own speed test go to http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/.
Another test is at
http://www.dslreports.com/stest. The numbers will be lower there, but not
as low as D.S.L.
There's also a neat graph to show what other types of connections get.

And, I've seen the PacBell commercials, too. What do you find all over the
ground at a stable?
'Nuff said!

To Scott,
Hot Rod Magazine did an article on the 57 Black Widow cars a few years ago.
A company in Georgia did all the modifications that were NASCAR cars. They
were all black/white 150 2 dr. sedans. They had fuel injected 283's that's
283 cubic inches rated at 283 horsepower, boxed upper and lower a-arms,
four
shocks on the rear end, 6 lug wheels all around and some other body
modifications. The most interesting modification was the heater register in
the front fender. Smokey Yunick did that to eliminate a problem with the
car
falling on it's face over 85 or 90 MPH. The car would quit running because
of a vacuum that was created under the hood. The heater register allowed
air
to flow properly under the hood.
The 55 businessman's coupe did not have a back seat. A lot of companies
bought them so their salesman could haul demo's and displays in the car.
They were all cheap as you could get type cars. I remember several of the
old Southwest Bell Telephone businessmen's coupes that ended up as Gassers
and Modified Production cars around this part of the country.

To Robert Moyes,

Here's what I have saved from earlier articles:

For a '57 the 4-bbl Air Filter is Fram CA-151.

-------------------------------------------------------

The Wix air filter #42050 filter element will fit the '57, but it's REAL
close to the outside of the can and will only pass air through the area
immediately next to the snout.

-------------------------------------------------------

For those who own a '57 Chevy with a 2 barrel carb there is a (disposable)
air filter available that fits the air breather. The interior section of
the air breather is removed and in its place, a Purolator filter, number
A30067 can be used. This filter fits exactly into the lower section of the
breather. Recently I took the breather to the auto store and went through
several filters until found one that fits. The lower rubber portion of the
filter forms the seal at the interior perimeter of the lower section of the
breather and the upper rubber portion forms the seal to the lid of the
breather. In fact, it's a perfect fit, looks good, requires no modification
to the breather and is functional.

-------------------------------------------------------

The '56 K&N filter element is Part #E-3650. You should cut the inside
portion of the air horn off close to the body so
that it isn't right up against the element. On the 56, the air horn sticks
into the body of the air cleaner about 1inch. I don't know why it stuck in
so far but if you want to get as big an element as possible, you need to
cut off that part that protrudes. If you don't want to do that, you have
to get an element that is at least 2" smaller in diameter and that will
necessitate getting one that will be about an inch shorter because the
bottom of the air cleaner body is cone shaped on the bottom and as you get
closer to the center, you also shorten the distance to the top of the
cleaner. I don't know if I am making sense, but it will become clear if
you look at the air cleaner body.

Don't know of anyone who's done it to a '55, but good luck!

I hope everyone on your list in Southern California will read todays (June
25th) Highway 1 in the LA times. It has an article called "Blind Spot in
Safety Net". We had a TERRIBLE TERRIBLE experience recently. I backed out
of our driveway on my way to work. I backed over our neighbors dog killing
him. I am not sure where the dog was when I started backing out and I
could not see him has I backed out. The car was parked in the driveway so
the dog may have been under the car. We just don't know. Needless to say,
that ruined my whole day, no my whole week. I felt terrible about the
accident and still do.

The great people on you list helped me with car information about a year
ago. I am now a high school senior in Little Rock Ark. I need the answer
for 2 car questions for a paper I am writing.

Question 1. What was the first year cars came with a sticker showing the
suggested retail price?

Question 2. What state now (2003) has its web page address (www.??????) on
the cars license plate?

You have so many knowledgeable people on your list, I bet someone will know
the answer?

Here is my roll call information.

I am 18 years old and a high school senior in Little Rock Ark. I got
interested in old cars last year when my boyfriend William Clinton (no not
that one) had a 57 Chevy. It was a "real cool" car. In fact every girl
in school wanted to ride in it. That is why he is my former boyfriend.
Plus the fact that he was in may ways like that William Clinton.

Dorris Young

PS:Bob, delete this part if you think it is too controversial. A local
newspaper ran a contest here to name an addition to the Clinton Library.
The winning name, "The Monica Wing".
