Bob,
Happy New Year to everyone!
Regarding the '61 Chevy SS, Yes, late in 1961 Chevy started producing the
409 and they did make a very small limited production of the SS which were
all 409 cars. Unfortunately, today there are more phony ones than real
ones.

Bob,

I have what I think is a 56 Chevy Carter carb. The tag is missing, which
is a terrible way to ID carbs. The number stamped on the top of the carb
is 1098. Can you tell me what it is? I heard today for the first time
that straight shift tri-5's came with the Carter carb and the automatics
came with the Rochester carb. Is there any truth to that?

Also, did Chevy make two intakes for the 56 4-barrel engines, ie, the '448
and the '109 or was one for the Corvette and if so which is which?

Thanks again Bob for the newsletter and as always remember that 'GOD is
Love and even more'.

Ken L. Ogle (423) 479-6317

PS. I have a 57 4-barrel intake, carb and air cleaner for sale if anyone
knows someone looking for one. Will not separate.

Bob;

Stumbled across your post board while searching for info on VIN tags. I'm
looking for a replacement VIN tag for my '57 2-door HT. I have the frame
VIN very readable, but as with some '57's it does not contain the 2 letters
in front which should be VC indicating V8 Belair.

The number I have, 57O108463 is correct etc. and is on the registration
(Canadian), but is also missing the VC part. Anyway, I'm planning on going
to ICBC to correct the registration portion, but am wondering if you know
of anyone who might be able to produce a VIN tag for me with the paperwork
I have.

Thanks,
DM

According to the Classic Chevy Club's Restoration and Guidelines Manual,
this car would be a 210 V-8. The V means V-8, the B means 2100 series,
which is the 210. The 2400 BelAir Series was a C. The A means it was made

in Atlanta.

According to CCI's Restoration and Judging Guidelines Manual, it depends on

what year it is. It would be a 3.55:1 that came in a Powerglide car in '55
or '56 and a 3.36:1 in a '57 automatic. By the way, it was made in the
Detroit plant and is not a posi. Glenn

Hi Bob,

This message is in response to Carol Woodhead's question about the VIN
tag on her 57. The VB indicates that the car was originally built as an
eight cylinder model 210. So the Bel Air trim it now has was added on
sometime after it left the Atlanta assembly plant.

Yes, Don, 1961 was the first year for the SS.

It came on the Impala only and the most desired today is the 409 SS.

I know you could get a 348 or 409. I can't recall if the SS in 61 was
available with the other engines.

To Don Foster, I'm not positive, but I was told there were only about 300
+
Super Sports for 1961, as it was the first year for the S.S., with very
limited production! At one car show I attended in Portland, Ore. about 8
or so
years ago, I saw 5 61 Super Sports! That should tell you something!!!!!
(
That Many 61 IMPALAS were MADE into Super Sports!!!!!!!!!), as all the S.S.

parts are available somewhere! Hope this is a help! Richard

A quick reminder that the Barrett Jackson Car Auction will be broadcast
live on cable channel Speed Channel for three days this year. Thursday
January 22 at 7-10 PM Eastern time, Friday the 23rd from 3-9 PM and
Saturday the 24th from 1-7 PM. Nearly 30 million dollars worth of cars
will be auctioned off over four days. The cars are fabulous and range
from one-offs to originals!

Check you local stations for times and listings!

And on the Discovery Channel starting at 10 PM eastern on January 16 you
can see American Hot Rod with Boyd Coddington. The first effort last
year was a spin of American Chopper and not quite sure if this effort
will be more of the same. Supposedly they will highlight their build of
a 55 white and red Chevy that was displayed in the front hallway of the
2003 SEMA show in Las Vegas. That car was dead on gorgeous so start
setting your VCR's now.

To be honest the first episode of Rides was a bit lame but I have high
hopes for the remaining episodes.

To Neville and his vin question-

VB57A_ _ _ _ _ _

The V means it was originally a v-8
The B means it is a 210. A's were 150's and C's are the Bel Air
The 57 means it is a 57 model
and the A means it was made in Atlanta

Over the years MVD agents will slip up. I actually once had one titled
as a 2 door that clearly had 4 doors.

If you have the Bel Air trim on the sides somebody slapped them on to
make a clone

Hi Bob,
As always, thanks for all the energy you put in on the list. I don't
think any one of us could tell you often enough how much we appreciate it.
I live on the AZ/NM border and it would be a pretty good trip to come
to a Meet the Editor Party, though I would love to be there. My question
is this: What do you think the response will be when I tell my bride,
"Honey, for our 33rd anniversary (Aug. 14) I'm going to take you on a
'vacation' (hee, hee) to Southern California?"
Best wishes to all of the list members, -Delivery Dale

Editor's note. Dale, the response might be "Is our state a community
property state?" Or, if you say, "lets
price a new home in Beverly Hills" the response might be "How soon can we
go?" <g>

Hi Bob,
This is for Stephen Gash and his question regarding dropped
spindles. I have a 57 Sport coupe that I have owned since 1962 and had
installed Camaro front springs many years ago to get the front end down
about 2". In 2000 I decided that I wanted the front end to set lower,so
had 2" dropped spindles from Mike McGaughy's Classic Chevy Parts inc.
installed. Along with the spindles we installed his disc brake kit. WOW
what a difference. The car is now 4" closer to the ground and I think the
look is perfect. I've driven the car over 20,000 miles since the
installation and have absolutely NO complaints. Check the ads in the
Chevy publications for current pricing. Just a note, these dropped
spindles are the one piece cast units and use 79-86 GM G body rotors and
calipers.

Larry Fulsome

P.S. With the 4" drop you do have to watch out for speed
bumps.

Confused in LA:

I checked the transmission fluid dip stick (which I think is located on
drivers side of car, located toward the back on long cylinder shaped item
with
diameter about 7 inches about 18 inches long and seems to be cleverly
marked
transmission fluid). It was over the full line.

I then took the car to a mechanic who supposedly specialized in classic
cars
because the transmission slipped. When some else picked up the car for me,
the
mechanic told them the transmission fluid was gone and that is why the
transmission slipped.

What am I missing? Where else can you check the transmission fluid on this
car?
Also, I thought that you added transmission fluid in the same place.
Thanks
Phyliss

I am a long time member of United frequent flyer program. They recently
gave me 3 certificates that I will give to the first three people that
request them. Once you get the certificates, all you have to do is apply
for a United credit card. When you get the card, you will get a
certificate for a FREE companion ticket. Then when you buy a ticket on
United to anywhere they go, you can take a companion free on the trip.
Anyone want one of these certificates? If yes, just send me your address.
