What a great note from Little South Fork Ranch, I have two 55's ,a red and
white 210 Delray purchased from Boyd Coddington, with the motor from the
Boydster II in it, and a over the top 55 belair with a polished jag rear,
polished
aluminum drive shaft , a polished 700R4, polished LT1, polished stainless
exhaust , etc, etc , and I wouldn't part with either one for less than a
$100,000.
In fact I was offered over a $100,000. for the Boyd car. He's right , you
just
can't find good ones any more and it will only get harder and harder to
find
them. It's not like some other cars that are being reproduced in glass,
these
are real steel priceless classics, that are rapidly increasing in value
everyday as they sit in our garages... jc

Bob,

Here are the items that may be of particular interest to list members which
I
listed this afternoon and evening on eBay.

1957 Chevrolet 283 cubic inch, Power Pack (4 bbl.) engine with original
Powerglide transmission, Rochester Quadrajet carburetor oil bath,
generator,
starter and differential pumpkin -- power steering hoses, hydraulic
cylinder and
front suspension parts (item # 2460247563). All of the casting numbers on
the
heads, block, transmission and rear end housing match for a car constructed
in
January, 1957. It was removed from an original project car where owner
changed
mind on power plant and drive train in the middle of the restoration.

Nice set of five 1956 Chevrolet original 15" wheels with five full-sized
wheel covers in 1956 paint scheme (item # 2460256349).

An even nicer set of five 1957 Chevrolet original 14" small slit wheels
with
five full-sized wheel covers (item # 2460259961).

Original 1956 Chevrolet 265 cubic inch 4bbl. intake manifold, original
Rochester Quadrajet carburetor and tall style oil bath air cleaner (item #
24560311374).

Nice pair of 1956, 265 cubic inch exhaust manifolds (item # 2460321236).

All of these items belong to my friend and sometimes mechanic, Bob Maurer
who
lives in Chandler, IN. He has been restoring Tri-Five Chevys for the
better
part of his entire life and a little over a year ago rebuilt the front
suspension on my little ol' '55 Palomino. I can vouch for his honesty,
integrity and
all of these parts are in great shape.

Serious buyers are encouraged to email me for details, reserve prices and
phone numbers. All of these items carry reasonable reserve prices (priced
to
sell, actually) and we may be listing other items in coming weeks.

There is another item that maybe someone along the list can tell me
something
about. He has another 283 cubic inch motor which has heads with casting
marks that say X-58. Someone a few years ago told him that these heads
were used
on 1958 Fuel Injected 283s. Does someone along the list know -- is this in

fact the case? Are these heads rare? If so, they may be more valuable
than
the other engine. We have no idea and would like to know more about these
heads
before trying to sell them on eBay.

As always, you continue to do a remarkable job and I always thoroughly
enjoy
reading every edition of this list.

Thanks so much,

I had a link to a supplier in PA somewhere and my hard drive had a stroke
last week resulting in my losing all my links and documents I had saved.
The supplier sold 55 56 57 chrome hood striker plates for (if memory
serves?) 29.95.
If anyone knows the place, please respond. Thanks in advance.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the list, always look forward to getting it. I had a 57 with a
283 with a 1960 Rochester Ram Jet HP F.I. unit on the engine for 18 years.
It
was a Black Bel Air Sport Coupe. After the injection was rebuilt by Sam
Reid
in Stockton, California the only adjustment I had to do was when it turned
hot
in Modesto I simply adjusted the air metering screw. It always ran great
and
I loved that singing noise it made. Most people didn't have any knowledge
of
how the F.I. worked, so the easiest thing to do was take it off and throw
some
carbureation on the engine. I remember watching a mechanic at Cleveland
Chevrolet in Port Orchard, Washington use a Manometer system to tune a 57.
The
F.I. cars were fast and could hold there own with any 57 cars at the drags.
As
so as I sell my 62 Bel-Air 409, I am going to build another FI 57 Hdtp.
Bet I
won't find any injection unit for a grand this time around.
Thanks,

Can anyone recommend someone that can repair these armatures or has good
working motors for sale ?

I'm also looking for a pair of 61-64 Cadillac power vent motors and
regulators - or the internal gears for these motors.

Bob, This is for Lyle and Paul who are thinking about fuel injection. I am
just finishing up an installation of the Holly throttle body electronic
system. Here are some things to know about this install;
The adapter plate for the throttle body will not work an a stock 55,56,57
four bbl manifold. I modified the plate by doing some heli-arc welding and
machining. I also machined an adapter so the original air cleaner could be
used.
A return line to the fuel tank is required and both lines connect to the
rear of the throttle body so I ran two new lines from the tank up to the
right rear of the engine keeping it all away from the exhaust, starter,
trans. cooling lines and wiring. Then I added a second fitting at the tank
opposite the fuel pickup to prevent turbulence from fuel coming and going
in the same spot of the tank. *Have a qualified welder add the new tank
return! The system needs inputs from water temp so you must be able to put
the temp sender someplace. On an original small block there is no place to
put this so I used a later model thermostat housing with a 1/2" pipe
threaded spot. Next item is the o2 sender. You need to drill a hole into
one of the exhaust pipes close to the exhaust manifold and weld in the bung
supplied in the kit. I put the o2 sensor on the right side pointed to the
rear of the car. This placed it close to all the wires that run up to the
throttle body and back to the controller. The controller needs to be
inside the car not under the hood. These electronic things don't like harsh
environments! You need to make a hole big enough to get a bundle of wire
about the diameter of your thumb through the firewall. Mount the controller
someplace where you can get to it because it is adjustable and anyone can
tune this system! The BEST part of this system is that it can be adjusted
for best performance!
How does my system perform? HeHeHe,,, Well, I am doing a lot more work on
the car including a complete engine rebuild, trans. rebuild, single wire
alternator, all new wiring, brake upgrade and just at the point of putting
the engine back in next week. But it sure is a nice looking unit but it
takes plenty of time and money to get it set up. Ask me in a couple months
how it is working out!

Scott,

in addition to Chevys ,I own a '62 corvette that I had blasted . as you
know, they're fiberglass and most media blast material will remove the
gelcoat real fast!!!!! It's not cheap, but I and many of my buddies swear
by this process.
advantages:
no heat........................................theref ore no warping of
panels.........as in sandblasting.
no damage to stainless................if you don't chose to remove it
all.
better control of media................operator can actually remove
only paint and leave original primer.
will not remove powdercoating...if you are doing a body that happens to
be on a powdercoated chassis.

Don't know where you are.....but I'm in San Diego. I had it done up in
orange county. don't remember company name, but if you are interested, I
can find it
for you . price......my car was done about 8 yrs ago.......was
$950.......but my car had been painted seven times without any coats
removed . So it's a time and materials thing. Mine took 12 man-hours.

hope this helps you. feel free to call me if you have any questions. I'm
not real good on this typing crap!!!!!! I'm a car guy!!!!! not a
typist!!!!

Hi Bob,
There is a very long list of first-year model cars that had problems,
including the '55 with the 265 small block. (Remember the Bon Ami story?
Mechanics were told to pour Bon Ami cleanser through the carb to help seat
the rings as the early 265s used a lot of oil.) Then there were all the
problems with the Turboglide trannys and fuel injections in '57. I had a
'60 Corvair, (first year for Corvair), that was recalled for having fan
belt problems due to the pulleys being too small. There was also a problem
with the valves sticking after about 40,000-50,000 miles. I also had a '62
Ford Fairlane, (first year for that mid-sized car), that spent a lot of
time in the dealer's shop for warranty work. It even came with a slightly
bent drive shaft!
As for the list of fuel injected cars, Al Sirk mentions a '57 fuelie 4
door hardtop, with Turboglide, that was in Canada. It's possible that the
list of Canadian-built Chevies wasn't included in the list you posted. That
list may have been just US built cars. It's also possible that Tom Ordway's
'57 Chevy BelAir 4 door wagon was built in Canada or had the fuel injection
installed at the dealer's when it was new. Tom is correct in that Sedan
Deliverys were not listed as automobiles, rather as trucks.
Lastly, for Don Szerencits, who is looking for a '57 Vauxhall Victor,
Hemmings has a '58 Victor listed but it's in Oregon. Ph-541-928-9744. You
can also try Kip Motor Co., in TX, as they handle lots of Vauxhall parts
and may have something restorable. kipmotor@aol.com or www.kipmotor.com
Again, Bob, thanks for this forum! Wild Bill

Two Comments for the next list, Bob:

Firstly, with respect to your comment or advice (received years ago) about
not buying a new vehicle design in the first year after it comes out. Not
only
is THIS sound advice, but it also follows if one looks at major components
as
well. For example, it is best to avoid the first year of a new engine, even

where the remainder of the car (body, chassis, transmission, final drive)
is/are
carry-over. Similarly, best to avoid the first year of a new transmission
as
well.

Certainly there have been some designs that debuted with minimal problems,
but the odds were - and continue to be - against it.

Certainly if nobody had purchased a new Chevy in '55, none would be around
to
collect today. But, there are always some people who just have to have
something that represents the newest and the latest. In truth, the early
'55 Chevy
265-cid V8s had a bit of an oil consumption problem. And, the bodies were
known
for being very rust-prone in the salt belt (especially the front fender
eyebrows and the quarter panels where they came up against the rear
wheelhouses).
These area were addressed as time went on. The first Chevy Vegas were a
disaster, as were the first Chrysler "Ultra Drive" 4-speed automatics with
overdrive
(recall that even the name got scrapped to deal with this faux pas). The
early
'65 GM GM "B" and "C" bodies had water leaks that you wouldn't believe (I
can
recall these even as a GMI student at that time). I could go on at length.

By the way, did anyone ever notice that the Japanese typically introduce a
new model and restrict it to the home market for a year before introducing
it in
North America? Smart move: by the time it reaches our shores most of the
early bugs are long gone - and their reputation for great, trouble-free
machinery
is intact.

Secondly, Don Szerencits asks where he might locate a '58 Vauxhall.
Although
these were, indeed, marketed in the US, they are scarce as hens teeth. They

were also marketed in Canada though, and one still sees a few as collector
vehicles up there. I'd suggest that Mr. Szerencits contact a Canadian
publication
by the name of Old Autos in Bothwell, Ontario (Phone 519-695-2303 / Fax
519-695-3717) and see about placing a "Wanted" ad.

And please check carefully for rust: these Vauxhalls are well-known for
major
problems in the areas where the front suspension mounts are attached.

Keep up the great work!

Does anyone know if coach builders still exist. That is, if I have a

is if they still exist, you would have to won the lottery to pay for it.
