Hey Bob

I just changed ISP and as you said, it is painful and I had less than 100
people in my address book. I am sending you a check to help you cover the
cost of conversion. You saved me over $1000 when you sent me the certificate
for a free companion ticket on United. I owe you big time.

I just retired after 30 years with the Post Office. I used that ticket to
fly my wife with me across country to our home town. I had not been there
for over 15 years. It was a wonderful trip and it was only possible because
of your generosity.

You are a great guy. Thanks for all you do.

Can someone give me advice on a motor and tranny for my 57 Bel Air. It now
has the original 283. What I would like to know is this.

What would be the advantage of a crate motor. Which one would recommend ?
Can you buy a crate 283? How much does a crate motor cost? Would it be any
better than a rebuild of my current motor?

If I have my current motor rebuilt, what options should I get. Should I

Have hard exhaust valve seats put in?

Have the motor balanced?

Get 3 angle valve seats?

Have the rough edges removed from the head intake and exhaust passages?

For the tranny, would you recommend a 350 or a 700R4. What are the
advantages and disadvantages of each? What should a rebuilt 350 and 700R4
cost?

bf,

just found a set of these heads and am wondering if they are any good for
restoration or just boat anchors?

the casting# is 3836839. This makes them some of the earliest heads made. My
friends say they are boat anchors...hard to believe.

what do you think?

thanks,

Bob, glad you finally got converted over. Yes, the spacing is STILL doubled
& the words still do NOT go to the end of the page. Richard

Good luck get that straightened up! Richard

Editor’s note. I am working on this problem. Hope to get it fixed soon.

Bob,

Thank you very much for the video and CD. They are both really great! I like
to see all the old WWII newsreel stuff. The one about setting up a
production plant and placing a steam locomotive as a power plant was great.
I like this kind of thinking, do what we need with what we have available...

Kind of like some of my restorations... It works great but sure not going to
win at a Chevy convention..

Thanks For all your hard work!

I have a 57 Chevy and to date I have installed 4 gas tank sending units.
They work a week or so then die. I have tested and checked all of the wiring
and bench tested the unit.

The last time and maybe them time before the float had gas in it but surely
this had not happened each time.

I am at a loss. Any ideas?

"Anyone on this list ever heard of the Horton Wingless

Aircraft?". I believe it was WWII German design. Every now and then the
History Channel has something called "Strange aircraft (German?) of WWII"
(not sure of exact title). Very interesting and enlightening to a WWII buff.

To Lou Bartoletti who asked about putting a T-5 into his 57.. I run a T-5 in
my 55. The T-5 from a Camaro/Firebird is mounted on an 18 angle. If you bolt
it up to your 57 Bellhousing, you will need to heat and bend the stick so
that it comes out at the proper angle, and you will need to do some creative
fabricating if you use a rear crossmember to make the mount bolt up.. I used
a late McLeod Bellhousing which has both sets of bolt holes, and I mounted
the trans at an angle so the the tailshaft motor mount came out parallel
with the ground (and my X member). The trans bolt holes are for metric
bolts, so you will need to drill them out for SAE bolts. With the later
trans, you will need to convert to a manual trans speedo gear; you will need
to use a 26 spline clutch disc; I cut the stick off and made a plate to bolt
a Hurst stick to it. (The shifter is built into the transmission, not bolted
to the side like a T-1o/Muncie). I have buckets so they clear (but reverse
is a chore if the right seat is all of the way forward) but a stick designed
for a tri-5 is supposed to clear the seat.

I love my o/d..It runs around 2000RPM at freeway speeds with a 4.11 gear. A
T-5 is not too strong. The 86 and later versions for a V-8 have a 2.95 1st
gear and can handle about 320 ft/lbs of torque. The 6 cylinder versions have
a really low 1st gear (like a 3.45) and a 14 spline input shaft, but they
are really weak. The mustang guys say that you absolutely can not power
shift a T-5...I am running a blown 355...so far so good !!!! E mail me if
you have any other questions...I will be on a cruise until the 27th:). Best
of luck....

Hi Bob

I have a question about a song for all on the list to help me figureout the
name and artist. It is about a little red Rambler Nash, that is following a
Cadillac. The Cadillac is speeding up and the Nash is speeding up. This
keeps going on up to about 125 miles an hours and the Nash finally pulls up
and the driver asks the Cadillac driver," how do get this out of second
gear". Does anyone out there know the name and the artist. I have a friend
the has a Ramiler Nash and has never heardthe song. Help

Thanks

Beep Beep The Playmates

(very slowly)

Beep beep beep beep

His horn went beep beep beep

While riding in my Cadillac

What to my surprise

A little Nash Rambler was following me

About one third my size

The guy musta wanted to pass me up

As he kept on tooting his horn

I'll show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn

Beep beep beep beep

His horn went beep beep beep

(slowly)

I pushed my foot down to the floor

To give the guy the shake

But the little Nash Rambler stayed right behind

He still had on his brake

He musta thought his car had more guts

As he kept on tooting his horn (beep beep)

I'll show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn

Beep beep beep beep

His horn went beep beep beep

(normal speed)

My car went into passing gear

And we took off with gust (whoosh)

Soon we were going ninety

Musta left him in the dust

When I peeked in the mirror of my car

I couldn't believe my eyes

The little Nash Rambler was right behind

You'd think that guy could fly

Beep beep beep beep

His horn went beep beep beep

(quickly)

Now we were doing a hundred and ten

This certainly was a race

For a Rambler to pass a Caddy

Would be a big disgrace

The guy musta wanted to pass me up

As he kept on tooting his horn (beep beep)

I'll show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn

Beep beep beep beep

His horn went beep beep beep

(very quickly)

Now we're going a hundred twenty

As fast as I can go

The Rambler pulled along side of me

As if we were going slow

The fella rolled down his window

And yelled for me to hear

"Hey buddy how do I get this car outa second gear?"

Last World Series wear both clubs were from the same city - The 2000 fall
classic between the New York Yankees and the New York Mets. When was the
last World Series played between two teams of the same city OTHER than a New
York team? Chicago White Sox vs. the Chicago Cubs in 1906.

Who was the first player to hit a World Series ending home run?

Bob, Thanks for "THE BOB FORD LIST" I really enjoy the articles and comments
from all over the country. I am currently working on a 55 NOMAD and a 57
CAMEO. I hope to get

the 55 NOMAD on the ROAD this summer, it has been an experience. I built
(frame off restoration) a 55 2dr sedan with my son while he was going to
high school and he is currently driving the wheels off fo it, 10,000 miles
in one year all within a 20 mile area!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alot of fun and enjoyment, was spent. I had to disassemble, clean,
re-chrome, re-wire, re-upholster, re-build, re-paint, and may many times
re-do what I had re-done. Money? let's not go there!!!!!! The best place to
get new & used PARTS for the 55 56 57 CHEVIES or 1967 68 69 CAMEROs is from
Roger @AMERICAN DISMANTLING in San Fernando, Ca. his # is 818-365-3908.
first class operation, very nice to deal with.I am running a 427 BIG BLOCK
with the 700 r4. But stock in appearance.

BOB, A couple of words of wisdom that, I would like to pass on to everyone
out there, applies not only to building a car but everyday life as well.

Hey Bob, you finally got a trivia question I can answer and know my answer
is correct. The last and I think only time a world series was played in one
city West of the Mississippi was 1944 in St Louis. The Cardinals and the
Browns. How do I know for sure? I went to all 6 games with my dad who was a
big time Cardinals fan. I was just a kid at the time.

I am pleased to announce that our car club, Heartbeat Classic Chevys, is

and a huge success generating significant monies every year for the
charities that we support. All proceeds from this event will be divided to
benefit the Escondido Humane Society and the San Diego Safe Kids Coalition.
Founded in 1915 and Incorporated in 1937, the Escondido Humane Society
(www.escondidohumanesociety.org) is a non-profit, multifaceted service

I got this link from someone on the old chevy trucks list and thought it was
worthwhile to pass along. While it is not Chevy related it does have to do
with cruzin in Russia. Worth reading all the way through.

I have another certificate for a free companion flight on United Air Lines.
All you have to do is apply for a United Airlines credit card. Anyone want
it?

I went to a car show in Orange California Sunday and say my first Playboy
car. Anyone ever heard of it? The sign on the car said it was built in
Buffalo, New York in 1948 thru 1951. I also say a Crosley. You could put
their engine in the glove compartment of our TriFives.

Please mark your calender for Aug 14, 2004. We will have another "Meet the
