I urge any California list member to go to
HTTP://WWW.GOVMAIL.CA.GOV

and express their opinion on AB 02683. This is the
proposed law that would repeal the
exemption of cars 30 years old from smog checks.

An interesting side note. Diesels produce millions more
tons of smog than cars over 30 years old
but you never see anyone proposing to clean up a diesel. I
wonder why?

Dear Bob,
Just got in a new radiator assembly for the tri-5,s.Check
out my
Website to see it at www.calwest-radiators.com , Also in
about 2
Weeks, we will have the reproduction 15" ( 57 steering
wheel )

Thanks,
Mike Novins

Editor's note. Here is a story from my past. I bought a
new 65 Buick Special. In 1968 the
steering wheel cracked. I bought a new one and in 3 years,
it cracked also. I complained to the
dealer about defective parts. He said he would check on it
for me. A few weeks later, he called
me and said the design life of the steering wheel was 3
years. That was my last Buick.

Bob This note to the guy that would like to join the club
but feels
his car is not up to appearing as nice as the other cars in
the club;

I believe that it is the love of these cars along with
their
wonderful history in this country that makes it fun and
worth while to own
one. Of course who does not want to own a 1000 point car?
Then how about
the folks who do not even have a car at all? I sugest to
this fellow
that he join the club and enjoy the fellowship and realize
he is one step
ahead of those who do not have a nice historical ride like
he does. Who
knows perhaps being in the club will open some doors for
him to upgrade
his ride. I would suggest welcome aboard to him.

CRUISIN FOR A CURE Ã Saturday, September 25
Are you a car guy? Do you love antique cars and hot rods
by the
thousands? If so, get to Orange County (CA) Fairgrounds in
Costa Mesa on
Saturday, September 25 for the largest one day car show
(and cruise) in the
world. 3000+ great vehicles will be in one place for a
good cause. All revenue
goes to the UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center, for prostate cancer
research.

Prostate cancer will strike over 189,000 men this year. Of
these, over 31,000
will die. In 2003, 775 men were tested at the Cruise. 52
were discovered to
have a high PSA count and instructed to see their doctor
for further testing.
Over the past several years, upon further testing, 14 men
were found to have the
disease, sent to the hospital, and received medical
attention that probably
saved their lives.

Hi Jerry,

We are getting ready to do a special tribute to the 50th
anniversary of the 55
Chevy. We are looking for a restored, or clean 1955 265
motor out of the car
to be put in a photo studio for a cover on super chevy
magazine. We need it
right away as they have a deadline. Could you please
spread the word and let
me know if anyone has a motor we can use for the photo
shoot.

I was reading through your recent list and found this:

It is a 1957 Chevy 2 dr wagon (One of only 206 made) with
the Belair option.

Huh? Please describe more fully- I've never heard of
this....

I have to agree with Wyatt, I've never heard of such a

certainly like to see more info on it.

Only low numbers vehicles I've ever heard of Chevy doing in

Bob, Please pass this info to our list members. There
is another site for selling/buying. It's called
"craigslist.org". What's nice about it is it's local.
You select your city and it will bring up a menu list
you can select from. Granted It's not as slick as eBay
or as big but, you can drive over and "see it before
you buy it". Do list members have other sites they
know of?

Tom,
As far as I know, the only 57 2dr wagon with the 'Belair'
option was the Nomad.
Looking at this car, it is obviously extemely modified. So,
most likely the
Belair moldings and inserts were added. There is also no
Belair dash trim or
hood & trunk emblems.

Bob concerning the gentlemen who has what he calls a "rough
car" and is
hesitant to join a club because he only saw beautiful cars,
I agree with you
that he would be welcomed into the club as nearly all of
the cars we build start
out rough and get beautiful as work is done on them. Most
of us do not have the
big bucks to have our cars professionally built and I
admire someone who works
on his own car no matter what their talent level is,
personally I would welcome
him to the club. Paul.

also interested in
tradeing it for something else as he had 3 of them. WoW, 3

Hi Bob,

I have one question for your great list:

>From Eckers (Classic Chevy Club), I tried to get some help
in regards
to the correct tire size for my 57 convertible, when using
aftermarket wheels.
I was looking for the widest possible, but remaining with
the original
tire diameter (in order to have correct speedometer). Then
I bought some 15"
wheels, and the suggestion from Eckers was to have tires:
235/70R15.
Now I have mounted the wheels, and they seem to have a too
high diameter
(seems to be woo big!).

Any comments to this from anybody?

Thanks and many greetings from Denmark

Hi Bob and list members:
First to Amos...As an ebay buyer who completes my side of
the
transaction first, I will not leave any feedback until I
receive mine. If you
as a seller, cashing my check and holding my merchandise
for 2 weeks
wants feedback first, you will have a long wait.

Next to the unnamed person who wants to join a classic Cevy
club in the
L A area...Classic Chevys of Southern California will
welcome anyone
who has an interest in these cars. Ownership is not a
requirement. We
are located in the San Fernando Valley. Jerry Mull and
LACCC will
welcome you as well. Sounds to me like you haven't checked
things out.

Lastly, I think Columbo drove something really popular like
a Simca.

Hi Bob and list members. Firstly thank all you guys for the
tremendous amount of
information that you pass on this list. There is always
something to learn with
every edition.I'm from down under Australia, and we don't
get the wealth of
information that comes with experience. So I have a 55
convertable and I want to
rebuild the treadle vac brake booster and master cylinder,
can anyone tell me
where I can get a rebuild kit from? I have spoken to
Danchuck and they do not
have a kit available. I will be in LA in early November and
am willing to bring
my treadle vac over. Does anyone know of a shop that will
rebuild it while I am
staying in LA? Any information would be great. Thanks Bob
for the effort you go
to ,to make this list appear on my screen, Kind regards to
all. Tony.

Editor's note. I suggest you contact Cliff Waldron at
clifchev@aol.com He can rebuild
it for you or sell you one already rebuilt. His phone
number is 503-667-4329. Cliff is located in

Hi Bob
I was reading about the 57 BelAir 2 Door Wagon. GM
does make
mistakes at the factory and I have a car that proves it. It
is a 57 210
hardtop, but the VIN shows it is a belAir and the trim tag
shows it a
210 hardtop. I know someone is going to ask does it have
the short
fins,
yes it does. It has holes in the quarter panels for the
Chevrolet
script. It has 210 door panels and interior. It has the
chrome Vee's on
the hood and trunk. I wonder how rare this car is? Does any
out have
that have a factory goof up like mine.
Thanks
Jim Larson

55 Hardtop (for sale)

Editor's note. Jim, where are you located. Someone
recently told me they wanted to buy a 55
hardtop. Please send me an e-mail for the next list
that describes the car you have for sale.
Also, have you seen the prices 57 convertibles are selling
for now. You may own a gold mine.

I am going to pass along some information from personal
experience that may make some people
unhappy but you might as well know the truth. I worked at
a car dealer when I was going to
college in Springfield Missouri in the 50s/60s. The more
cars a dealer sells, the more goodies the
dealer get from the factory. Like a bigger allocation of
hot selling cars or warranty coverage of
repairs they would normally reject.

Therefore, dealers will do almost anything to sell a car.
This brings me around DSO (Dealer
Special Order) cars. If someone came into the dealer and
wanted a car with a non standard color
for instance they could get it if they wanted to pay extra.
Want a hole drilled in a car's roof. No
problem, the price was $25 then. The biggest users of these
options were cab companies. They
wanted a yellow car and a hole in the roof. If the buyer
wanted something really exotic, the
dealer had to ask the factory if they could build a car
like the buyer wanted. If the factor could
build the desired car, they sent back a price for it. The
buyer then had the option to buy the exotic
car they wanted or not.

All of these "special" cars had DSO stamped on the cowl
tag. I don't remember all of the non
standard options that people got on their cars. A few I do
remember was a person that wanted a
car that had not been painted. He wanted to do it himself.
He got that car. Another guy wanted
a car with a partition between the back and front seat. He
got that car. Another guy who was
very tall wanted seats that went back farther than normal.
He got that car also but at great
expense.

Hey Jeff,
In the 1961model year GM started building "mid-sized "
cars, Oddly,
Chevrolet was the only GM division that stayed with the
"full-sized" cars with
the exception of the Corvair and the Corvette. The other GM
mid-sized cars were
the Buick Special, Olds Cutlass, and Pontiac Tempest. In
1962 Chevrolet
introduced the Chevy II, later Nova, With the introduction
of the Chevelle in
1964, GM had a complete line of mid-sized cars. Of course
Cadlilac didn't deem
it necesary to go for a smaller car as they were all about
size and luxury, i
hope this answers your question, If you ned more info feel

Hey Bob:

1) I'm going from memory but I recall the Beverly
Hillbillies "truck"
as being a 1921 Oldsmobile touring car that had its rear
cut off
and a truck body mounted.

2) As for Jeff's question...the GM A-body cars (based on
the Chevelle)
were the Pontiac Tempest/LeMans/GTO, the Olds
F-85/Cutlass/4-4-2,
and the Buick Special/Skylark/GS. Now to make things more
interesting...in Canada, in the 60's, Pontiac sold a series
of Chevies
with Pontiac trim. The mid-size entry was called
"Beaumont",
distinguished by a split grille and other trim changes.
1969 was the last year for
Beaumont, Pontiac went to the American Tempest/Le Mans/GTO
lineup for 1970.

3) Colombo drove an old Peugeot convertible. Don't know the
year.
I saw Peter Falk and the car recently in a magazine though.

Enjoy your news letters and find interesting topics from

I have a 1955 Chevy Pickup with the big rap around window
in back. I
want to put over the shoulder seat belts in it since it is
my daily
driver and I cant trust the driving of some people on the
roads. The area
on the door jam post is wide enough to accept a bolt, or I
will take
out the rear window and weld on a clip for thickness and
attach a seat
belt loop to it.
Has anyone done this to their truck yet, and does anyone
have any
information on what to use for a cross-the shoulder belt?
I would appreciate any input, and thanks

this chassis too. I
believe they are all "G" bodies in the General Motors

Bob:
Regarding C J Wilson's question about GM
intermediates...The Pontiac
version was the Tempest (GTO was a tempest) and the Buick
was the Skylark. A
Skylark GS had a larger engine and a handling package, 64
and 65 GS's had
either a 401 or 425 nailhead, and the later versions had
400, 430 or 455
depending on the year. One of the fastest production cars
of the era was the 70/71
GSX
Buick...These things would run in the 12's with good tires.

Mr. Ford

You do not know me but one of your list members sent me a
copy of one of your list last year
where someone had found their mother and father in Hawaii.
They had a good outcome. My
friend on your list knew I was searching for my parents
with no luck so they sent me that item.

Although I really could not afford it, I hired someone to
help me search for my mother. After a
few months they found her. I flew to California to see her
a few weeks ago. Tears flowed for
hours when we meet. My mother had recently had breast
surgery for cancer and she was going
through an extremely rough chemo therapy. She told me
that seeing me gave her the strength to
carry on the chemo therapy which she was about ready to
give up on because it hurt so much.

Thanks so much for what you have done for me. I now feel my
life is complete.
