    55 chev wanna put a 283 back in it ,i know should be a 265 ques

    hi few years back bought a 4 dr 55 with a 400 ci pont eng/trans in it..gets hot will not start sometimes back fires so bought a 283 with auto trans ques..can I bolt the 283 to frame with 265 eng mounts ...any one got a pic of how it bolts in?..know silly ques ...hoppin it will fit thanks..Charles errrrr..old new guy..ha..

    YES it will bolt right in where a 265 was . Ramhorn Ex maniflods for the 283 is a plus also over the 265 log style

    It depends on how you want to mount it, and what they did to install the 400. The stock mounting configuration for the V8 used two mounts on the front of the block, and two on the side of the bellhousing that connected to frame mounts. The transmission had no additional mount.

    Most engine swaps included two side mounts on the side of the engine, and a transmission crossmember like the 58 and later Chevys. A lot of guys cut off the bellhousing mount horns from the frame and if yours are gone you can't go back to the stock mounting configuration unless you put them back onto the frame.

    Are you trying to restore the car to original, or just make it a driver? Why not figure out why the 400 won't start instead of going to a 283?

    All the above depends on what they modified to put a Pontiac 400 in it.
