Organal 55-57 V8 does not have that sleeve later SBCs have it for alignment. A heavy duty one piece all steel shaft is available for later V8s.
Its a Oil Pump Intermediate Shaft Guide

And make sure it's on there. I found out the hard way when I was 19 rebuilding my first engine, a 69 Vette 427 at the Long Beach Naval Base hobby shop. I had to pull the oil pan and pump back off to put it on, after thinking it would go in from the top. Did the same thing on the clutch fork, thinking it would go in after the trans was on.
excellent, guys! thanx. yea, it`s there!
and like i said, more questions to come, as this thing goes together. thanx again!
The plastic piece is not just a guide, it is a snap together coupler. The aftermarket replacement don't snap together - the intermediate shaft has a permanently mounted sleeve that slips over the oil pump shaft.
The one piece aftermarket one is $8 well spent esp. if HV pump.
You can save even more by not using an HV pump, which only causes trouble.
