How much power do you intend to put thru it?
There are the parts you mentioned, and also some other "triks", that an experienced performance builder can use, to get it to live.
Once 500FW is in the equation, my builder says 4L80E.
The GMPP 4L75E has some upgraded parts and has a decent HP rating. Kinda pricey.
We are doing a 500FW/LS6, into a 54 Chevy pickup. It will have the 80E in it.

The orginal 700R4s were weak, however with each year of production they got better. by the time the 4l60E came about they were pretty good especially if upgraded.

No, In 1987 when the 4L60 came out with the auxillary valve body they were much netter than prevous versions. The 4l60E is the next gen after that one.
