Sept. 11, 2001 - A Date Which Will Live In Infamy

Sept 11, 2001 is one of those dates where, like the attack on Pearl Harbour...... Those who lived through it whether there or elsewhere..... Will ever remember where they were and what their reaction to it was when they learned of it.

Where were you and what were you doing that fateful day?

Here are my recollections of that day......

My wife was working from home that day and I was off work because I had a morning appointment to see a doctor and his office was an hour's drive away in the Med Center down in Houston. Wife was watching TV and I was getting dressed, about to head out the door and get into the car.

I sat down on the couch beside her to pull on my shoes. The news people broke into the regularly scheduled show and announced that a plane (no description as yet) had crashed into one of the Twin Towers in New York City. Wife and I said what a terrible thing and the news people transitioned from talking about the B-25 bomber that got lost in heavy fog near the end of WW II and crashed into the Empire State Building..... To reporting on the crash into the Twin Towers as more news came in.

I got up and was saying goodbye to my wife when the 2nd plane crashed into the other tower and we knew instantly that it had to be a terrorist attack. I got into the car and began the drive into Houston. Traffic was light. Made it in 50 minutes at mostly highway speeds. Listened to the news on the car radio and after arriving in the doctor's waiting room, on the TV there until my name was called. There were rumours that turned out not to be true of a bomb threat in the Med Center and that we might have to evacuate the building.

Finally got in to see the doctor. He was an endocrinologist. Thick English accent. He was as if in a trance. Asked me what the latest news was after quickly reading me my test results. So I filled him in. At which point, he abruptly got up, put his coat on and reached into a drawer. Pulled out two bottles of pills. Put one in his coat pocket. Handed me the other and told me to follow directions on the bottle. Then he called the front desk on his intercom and told them to cancel all his appointments for the remainder of the day. And without another word, he turned and headed down the private corridor to the 'physicians only' elevator and left the building, leaving me in his office with a bottle of Zanax in my hand. Not prescribed, just handed to me.

Which was kinda crazy because I wasn't nuts...... I was there because I was getting older, had less energy and wanted to know if I needed to take anything to boost testosterone levels.

Got home, researched Zanax on the internet. Seems it is a psychotropic drug. No way I was taking anything like that! Life is challenging enough without messing around with your brain chemistry. So I flushed them down the crapper and never went back to see that doctor. Hope he made it home that day. He was really zoned out when he left his office.

It was the following day as more details of the attack were made public and the initial shock wore off that the enormity of this evil act really set in and my wife and I began to process it. And the grief slowly began giving way to anger and heightened resolve to find those who planned and did this evil thing and avenge all those whom they murdered.

    Best regards to all,

    Harry

    ---

In the days following the attacks on our nation September 11, 2001...... Several planes when searched, were found to have box cutters and other items left behind by terrorists. These planes were to have been hijacked and flown into pre-chosen targets such as the White House and nuclear power plants but as word got out regarding the 4 planes which were hijacked..... Terrorists boarding other flights aborted their missions as the element of surprise was lost and along with it, any chance of success.

The four flights that were hijacked that day......

    * American Airlines Flight 11: a Boeing 767 aircraft, departed Logan Airport at 7:59 a.m. en route to Los Angeles with a crew of 11 and 76 passengers, not including five hijackers. The hijackers flew the plane into the northern façade of the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City at 8:46 a.m.

    * United Airlines Flight 175: a Boeing 767 aircraft, departed Logan Airport at 8:14 a.m. en route to Los Angeles with a crew of nine and 51 passengers, not including five hijackers. The hijackers flew the plane into the southern façade of the South Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City at 9:03 a.m.

    * American Airlines Flight 77: a Boeing 757 aircraft, departed Washington Dulles International Airport at 8:20 a.m. en route to Los Angeles with a crew of six and 53 passengers, not including five hijackers. The hijackers flew the plane into the western façade of the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, at 9:37 a.m.

    * United Airlines Flight 93: a Boeing 757 aircraft, departed Newark International Airport at 8:42 a.m. en route to San Francisco, with a crew of seven and 33 passengers, not including four hijackers. As passengers attempted to subdue the hijackers, the aircraft crashed into a field in Stonycreek Township near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, at 10:03 a.m.

I remember fixing our washmachine, that day. My son was just over a year old and was watching me repair. I deliberately short circuited the lines going into the machine, in order to get him scared of playing with electricity. Instead, he thought it was cool.
Later on when news got out, my first thought when I saw George Bush's facial expression, while he was sitting in front of those elementary school kids, was that he definitely knew this was going to happen. Of course, I still could be wrong. But, his body language reminded me of the poor acting viewed in one of those World Wrestling Federation shows

He didn't know, Al. He had to keep his composure in front of the children whilst the TV cameras were on and then be briefed as to what was known at that point after leaving the room.

In such instances when our nation is attacked during times of war, there is a plan of action in place which requires the president to be flown in Air Force One whilst escorted by armed fighter jets to certain places to keep him from being assassinated.

There were several airliners the terrorists planned to be used to fly into targets including the White House. One was intentinally crashed in Pennsylvania by the terrorists as passengers attempted to rush them and gain control of the plane. And there were 2 others with similar missions that were not hijacked and those terrorists escaped and slipped into Canada. The planes that were not hijacked had the White House as their primary target as did the one that crashed in Pennsylvania and in the event one of them managed to get through, the remainder were to fly into the closest nuclear power plants as their secondary targets.

    Best regards,

    Harry

When we were still working, we had a receptionist working for us, and is still a good friend. Her cousin was a pilot on Flt 93. Her other cousins are in Pennsylvania today for the memorial.

Killed about the same number of Americans as the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

It was surprising to see that none of those planes had all or even most of their seats filled to capacity. How does an airline even earn money from flying only a few dozen passengers?
Here in Germany, a suicide pilot knocked off his co-pilot, locked the door and then flew into a mountain side, all because they changed the doors so that terrorists couldn't get into the flight cabins, after 911 happened

That is the way it was back then, Al. There was sufficient profit to make airliner flights possible even when not filled to capacity. Though there were cases of these seats being filled by those waiting to fly 'standby'. Of course, that practice is much more complicated and time consuming now due to changes in airport security following the attacks of 11 September, 2001......

    https://pointmetotheplane.boardingar...o-fly-standby/

Regarding the terrorists...... All were armed with box cutters. And they took advantage of standard procedures in place at the time which required passengers and crew to be compliant, as the usual practice of hijackers in those days was to hold crew and passengers hostage and demand a ransom for allowing them to go once they commandeered the plane and landed at a different location than scheduled.

The exception that day were the passengers of Flight 93 who heard via cell phone conversations with family members on the ground about the airliners already crashed into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. They were heading towards Washington, DC and likely would be crashed into the White House. So they took it upon themselves to rush the terrorists and attampt to take back the plane, but the terrorist flying it chose to dive it into the ground before they could take him out. Brave men and women all, the passengers and crew of Flight 93. And of the other planes, as well.

Regarding the terrorists gaining entry to the flight cabins......Airline pilot uniforms were stolen from launderers beforehand. Once the 5 hijackers boarded a plane, 4 posed as passengers whilst the 5th, dressed in a stolen pilot's uniform, made his way to the cabin and sat with the flight crew in a spare jumpseat provided as a courtesy to visiting pilots traveling to their destinations. The job of this terrorist was to take over the flight controls in the confusion created by his compatriots taking control of the passenger cabin and he allowed a second terrorist to enter the flight cabin to assist him in taking over the flight controls.

You may recall that in an earlier post, I mentioned that there were 2 other flights that the terrorists planned tohijack, but aborted and made their way to Canada. This was discovered when planes were grounded and searched following the 3 crashes of 11 September. 2 planes were found to have the same boxcutters used by the terrorists. These were hidden in seat cushions when the terrorists left those planes. FBI later identified the terrorists who fled to Canada. Why did they abort? I suspect it was because the news was reporting on the other planes and they had lost the element of surprise. But it could also have been that the 5th terrorist whose job it was to gain entry to the crews cabin by 'jumpseating' in a stolen pilot's uniform...... Was unable to do so.

The terrorists had taken flight training courses at flight schools in America months priour to the highjackings. After the attacks, the people at the flight schools said they thought it odd that these students were not interested in learning to take off nor to land a plane. Only how to fly one already airbourne. That should have raised a red flag...... But no one reported it to authorities beforehand.

You may find this timeline of interest. You will note at the last that it makes mention of 'jumpseating' and that the 9/11 Commision concluded there was none because there was no formal paperwork found. I don't believe that for a moment, as things were quite laissez-faire regarding that practice in those days and its quite likely that paperwork was not demanded by the cabin crew.......
