    Hello Everyone,

I recently picked up a 1997 GMC Sonoma, it runs great but the clear coat is falling off!! has anyone ever tried to or did fix this? If you did how did you do it ad how'd it come out? Thanks

Unfortunately, if your clear coat is falling off, it's time to start over with a complete repaint.

This is why I didn't want it!!! I told my wife (who wanted it) I'd rather get one that looks good and has mechanical problems, at least I could fix that!!! Thanks

The clear coats from the 80's (?) had some issues with IR or UV which made them peel or scale off pretty quickly. If that's the condition of yours, a few hours with a sanding block and sandpaper could remove the remaining clear coat, and at least get it in condition for a quick sanding of the remaining base and prepared for an inexpensive repaint (think MAACO, or other similar enamel/urethane paint jobs for a few hundred $$, ??)...?

When we had a local Maaco I prepped numerous flip cars and had them painted there with very good results. They like so many of my go to places are gone. Other than that Rick nailed it.

I've seen that cc taken off with a razor blade...As in the entire car done.

I have done that with lacquer more than once. I have little experience with CC.

So you remove the CC with a razor blade. Then you still have to deal with the base coast, then repaint using base and clear.

I remember in the 90s my Dads 88 Jimmy was peeling I took it to a buddy who said he could paint it buy go back to dealer and see them. There was a recall and it cost Dad a couple hundred due to age. It was a hell of a deal for a complete.
