Valuation Help
The motor I took out of my '55 is a 283 bored 30 over with double camel-humped heads. Engine numbers: 349852; heads: 3782461. Engine is complete and was running when I took it out.
Please advise me regarding the value.
Thanks,
Ken

The 461 heads are worth something to the right person... 283's aren't valued much these days although if it doesn't need rebuilding and runs good, should be worth a few hundred. It sounds like an engine that was built long ago as a 'performance' 283. The 60cc combustion chambers and 1.94" intake valves help a 283 if it's built right..
3782461: 1964 through 1966 327ci, 60cc chambers, 1.94/1.50-inch valves.
3849852 Small Block V8 1957-1966 283, 2 bolt

The 461 heads also came with 2.02/1.6 inch valves and were used on the solid lifter motors in 64/65 (365/375hp), and I suspect the 350hp 66 motors. I still have a rebuilt pair I bought new in 1965.

I thought that also Richard, but the only quick online reference I found said they were 1.94 only... shows to go you.. that everything on the internet isn't the gospel!

I have probably owned a couple hundred 461/462 Camel Hump heads in the past 50 years or so and only one set has been 2.02/1.60, truthfully they are 291s. Additionally they are all 64cc and make a flat top 283 a real turd, most 283s are in the 57 cc range. I have a pair with 2.02/1.60 stainless steel valves new, screw in studs & guide plates, etc fresh for $500.00 and still have them.

Most produced were probably the 300hp 461s/462s, not surprising most out there have been the 1.94s. Also, many 1.94s have been machined for the bigger 2.02/1.6 valves, since the casting was the same.
It’s a similar situation with the 186 heads, since the casting supported both smaller and larger valves.
