    Installing a 1960 Chevrolet power steering pump , and alternator on a 1957 283

    Can a stock separate power steering pump , and alternator from a 1960 Chevrolet V-8 283 just bolt onto a 1957 Chevrolet 283 V-8 ? Dose the 1957 Chevrolet 283 motor have all the needed threaded holes up front ? Would this be just a bolt on swap over job to eliminate the original 1957 Chevrolet combination generator and power steering pump ? How about the power steering lines ?

    dom: I don't believe a '60 Chevrolet used an alternator. IIRC it used a generator and generator driven PS pump very similar or the same as our '57 cars...??

    Bama I believe that Chevrolet used the generator / power steering combination from 1955 thru 1959 . In 1960 they went to the separate power steering pump and an alternator for the first time . I wonder if the front of the 1957 Chevrolet 283 block will have the right threaded holes for the mount for the pump and the bracket for the alternator . All so will the power steering hoses work ?

    Bama , after some research I found out that Chevrolet made an Alternator an option in 1962 , and standard in 1963 . The generator , with the built in power steering pump ran from 1955 thru 1959 . A 1960 Chevrolet would have had a separate generator , and power steering pump .

    I can get you half way there - Borgeson make a power steering pump bracket that incorporates the engine mount - their part # 802404 for $84.
    Further Google searches show Autocity Classic has a similar bracket for $47 part # 5557PSM-FM. Southwest Performance Parts has one for $34 - can't find part # for that one.
    I imagine it shouldn't be too hard to get an alternator mount to suit your 57.

    Hey thanks for the information . Me and my friend had trouble with his 1958 Impala which has the combined generator and power steering pump . We had to get flat bedded back 4 hours to NY from this past years Hershey Fall meet because of the unit going out . It would be so much easier to deal with a separate Alternator and pump , but then it's not original if your showing the car .

    You could maybe use one of the alternators that look like a generator - think they are called Powergen, and mount the pump down low where it's hard to see.

    Did you guys in the USA get the Nissan (Datsun) Patrol back around the 1990's, or maybe earlier? They had an alternator with a power steer pump at the rear, like the 57 gen/PS pump combo, but they would be hard to find now.
    My stepson did his auto electrical apprenticeship around that time and I recall him saying that his boss loved repairing those Nissan alternators and charged double for them against any other alternator rebuild. I asked him if they were difficult to work on and he replied that they weren't difficult - a couple of bolts holding the PS pump, but his boss liked to tell his customers that they were not "normal", and more work etc and the customers generally fell for it.

    The generator brackets attached via the exhaust manifold.. unless my memory is totally failing me... no bolt into the block or heads...?

    Alternators were first optional in 1962 and standard equipment in 1963. Except for Corvair models I was corrected on this years ago on the other site by Arcadion. The 58-62 generator is longer than the 55-57 version.

    Thank you for the information. The full size 1960 Chevrolet four door hardtop with the 283 V-8 that I seen with the separate power steering pump , and alternator mounted up front had to be a conversion .
