Bob, I have been reading the responses regarding your
advice on purchasing cars
sight-unseen. I have some questions. In a long distance
transaction, would it
be possible for a dishonest seller to substitute a sound
car (ringer) for the
one he is offering to sell and submit that one to a third
party for inspection?
Would you want to know the registration or other numbers to
hopefully avoid this
situation? And would it be possible to put the purchase
money in escrow to be
turned over to the buyer upon receiving and examining the
vehicle? If this is
done, who would pay the shipping? The would-be buyer, I
suppose.
We have purchased two cars sight-unseen. One through your
list which was
honestly represented and we are pleased with, and one from
a non-Ford list
seller which turned out to be a large collection of rust,
sits hidden by a
fence, and is affectionately referred to as "Old Rusty".

calendars and
re-use them in the year 2005. Yes, all the days match up
the same, but

Bob,
This is in reference to the question from Doug Dean on
factory break in periods.
I visited one the GM powertrain plants in Detroit where
they assembled the old
4.3 liter V-6 and V-8's for trucks. There are two things I
saw them do:
1.) They cold crank the engine for a minute to see
if there any loose
parts.
2.) Next they put the engine on an overhead conveyor
system and they go
to a test cell that's on a rotary platform. The engines
are hooked up to
natural gas and water along with the electricals. The
engine is started and ran at
several RPM levels to check its vital signs ( oil
pressure, airflow, etc.) they
are run for about 60 - 90 seconds, put back on the
conveyor, crated and shipped to the
assembly plant.
I didn't see any test cells like the type I remember from
my days working at
Caterpillar where the diesels were run for 20 minutes.
Hopefully that will
answer his question. I would take it easy on the engine
for at least a few
hundred miles.

I should add that I've also backed away from buying a few
cars sight unseen just
because I didn't feel comfortable after talking with the
seller over the phone.
In fact, I subsequently learned that a friend would be
traveling on company
business and would be glad to inspect one of these same
cars during an upcoming
trip. After he did, my suspicions were confirmed!
I suppose I've been lucky, but one can usually do OK if you
stop and heed those
uneasy feelings when they are present.
I think the trouble usually comes when on FAILS to heed the
danger signs -- and
listens only to the glowing reports from the seller.
Still, I agree with you that a personal inspection is
always best -- at least in
those cases where the dollar amount at risk is more than
one could comfortably
write off.

Bob, just a note of warning for all those who wish to
transport their vehicles. Do not, under any
circumstances ship your vehicle by A-1 Auto Transport,
supposively located at 1802 N. Carson
St. #21 2 - Carson City, Nevada - 89701 - 1-800-452-2880.
This is just a satellite office. They are
located in Watsonville, Calif. I recently contracted A-1 to
transport my 1956 Chev. wagon to
Spokane, Wash. from El Monte, Calif. The car was registered
at the BowTie Convention to be
held in Coeur d'Alene, Id. I gave the Co. over 2 weeks to
deliver the car. They picked it up 2 days
earlier than previously arranged. I called them on the due
date and they said they missed the truck
going to Spokane and they said that they guessed they
screwed up. Each time I got in touch with
them, they gave me a different location for the car. 1.
Portland, Ore. 2. Seattle, WA. and lastly, 3.
On a truck somewhere in No. Calif. It finally arrived in
Renton, Wash. on Sat. at a receiving
terminal with no delivery instructions, just our phone #
where we were staying in Liberty Lake,
Wa. We called Renton and asked about delivery. They said
that they were not affiliated with A-1
and had not scheduled a delivery to Spokane 'till Tues. As
the Show in Idaho was from
Mon.-Thurs., this did me no good. They said to fax them a
release and they would let me have
the car that night. We had to drive to Renton and pick up
the car. Upon delivery we noticed large
scratches in the door pillar, window frame and the 2 rear
bumper guards were damaged +
someone had stolen the passenger side windshield arm &
wiper. To make a long story short, my
Insurance co. paid for the damages, etc. and is now in the
process of recovering some of the
claim expenses. So far, A-1 claims no responsibility for
said damage. So please let the members
know of this sad state of affairs and do not use A-1 Auto
Transports.

We actually received a call last week from the
809 area code.
The woman said "Hey, this is Karen. Sorry I
missed you--get back to
us quickly.
Have something important to tell you." Then she
repeated a phone
number beginning with 809.
We didn't respond.
Then this week, we received the following e-mail:
Subject: DON'T EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809, 284 AND 876
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION PROVIDED TO US
BY AT&T. DON'T
EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809
This one is being distributed all over the US. This
is pretty scary,
especially given the way they try to get you to
call.
Be sure you read this and pass it on to all your
friends and family so
they don't get scammed!
MAJOR SCAM:
Don't respond to Emails, phone calls, or web pages
which tell you to call
an "809" area Phone Number.
This is a very important issue of Scam Busters
because it alerts you to
a scam that is spreading *extremely* quickly, can
easily cost you $2400
or more, and is difficult to avoid unless you are
aware of it.
We'd like to thank Verizon for bringing this scam
to our attention.
This scam has also been identified by the National
Fraud Information
Center and is costing victims a lots of money.
There are lots of different permutations of this
scam.
HERE'S HOW IT WORKS:
You w ill receive a message on your answering
machine or your pager,
which asks you to call a number beginning with area
code 809. The reason
you're asked to call varies. It can be to receive
information about a
family member who has been ill, to tell you someone
has been arrested,
died, to let you know you have won a wonderful
prize, etc. In each
case, you are told to call the 809 number right
away. Since there are
so many new area codes these days, people
unknowingly return these calls.
If you call from the US, you will apparently be
charged $2425 per-minute.
Or, you'll get a long recorded message The point
is, they will try to
keep you on the phone as long as possible to
increase the charges.
Unfortunately, when you get your phone bill, you'll
often be charged
more than $24,100.00.
WHY IT WORKS:
The 809 area code is located in the British
Virgin Islands
The 809 area code can be used as a "pay-per-call"
number, similar to 900
numbers in the US. Since 80 9 is not in the US,
it is not covered by
U.S. regulations of 900 numbers, which require that
you be notified and
warned of charges and rates involved when you call
a pay-per-call"
number.
There is also no requirement that the company
provide a time period
during which you may terminate the call without
being charged. Further,
whereas many U.S. homes that have 900 number
blocking to avoid these
kinds of charges, do not work in preventing calls
to the 809 area code.
We recommend that no matter how you get the
message, if you are asked to
call a number with an 809 area code that you don't
recognize, just
disregard the message.
Be wary of e-mail, or calls, asking you to call an
809 area code number.
It's important to prevent becoming a victim of
this scam, since trying
to fight the charges afterwards can become a real
nightmare. That's
because you did actually make the call. If you
complain, both your

be possible for a dishonest seller to substitute a sound
car (ringer) for the

We have purchased two cars sight-unseen. One through your

honestly represented and we are pleased with, and one from

Bob,
This is in reference to the question from Doug Dean on
factory break in periods.
I visited one the GM powertrain plants in Detroit where
they assembled the old
4.3 liter V-6 and V-8's for trucks. There are two things I
saw them do:
1.) They cold crank the engine for a minute to see
if there any loose
parts.
2.) Next they put the engine on an overhead conveyor
system and they go
to a test cell that's on a rotary platform. The engines
are hooked up to
natural gas and water along with the electricals. The
engine is started and ran at
several RPM levels to check its vital signs ( oil
pressure, airflow, etc.) they
are run for about 60 - 90 seconds, put back on the
conveyor, crated and shipped to the
assembly plant.
I didn't see any test cells like the type I remember from
my days working at
Caterpillar where the diesels were run for 20 minutes.
Hopefully that will
answer his question. I would take it easy on the engine
for at least a few
hundred miles.

I should add that I've also backed away from buying a few
cars sight unseen just
because I didn't feel comfortable after talking with the
seller over the phone.
In fact, I subsequently learned that a friend would be
traveling on company
business and would be glad to inspect one of these same
cars during an upcoming
trip. After he did, my suspicions were confirmed!
I suppose I've been lucky, but one can usually do OK if you
stop and heed those
uneasy feelings when they are present.
I think the trouble usually comes when on FAILS to heed the
danger signs -- and
listens only to the glowing reports from the seller.
Still, I agree with you that a personal inspection is
always best -- at least in
those cases where the dollar amount at risk is more than
one could comfortably
write off.

transport their vehicles. Do not, under any
circumstances ship your vehicle by A-1 Auto Transport,
supposively located at 1802 N. Carson
St. #21 2 - Carson City, Nevada - 89701 - 1-800-452-2880.
This is just a satellite office. They are
located in Watsonville, Calif. I recently contracted A-1 to
transport my 1956 Chev. wagon to
Spokane, Wash. from El Monte, Calif. The car was registered
at the BowTie Convention to be
held in Coeur d'Alene, Id. I gave the Co. over 2 weeks to
deliver the car. They picked it up 2 days
earlier than previously arranged. I called them on the due
date and they said they missed the truck
going to Spokane and they said that they guessed they
screwed up. Each time I got in touch with
them, they gave me a different location for the car. 1.
Portland, Ore. 2. Seattle, WA. and lastly, 3.
On a truck somewhere in No. Calif. It finally arrived in
Renton, Wash. on Sat. at a receiving
terminal with no delivery instructions, just our phone #
where we were staying in Liberty Lake,
Wa. We called Renton and asked about delivery. They said
that they were not affiliated with A-1
and had not scheduled a delivery to Spokane 'till Tues. As
the Show in Idaho was from
Mon.-Thurs., this did me no good. They said to fax them a
release and they would let me have
the car that night. We had to drive to Renton and pick up
the car. Upon delivery we noticed large
scratches in the door pillar, window frame and the 2 rear
bumper guards were damaged +
someone had stolen the passenger side windshield arm &
wiper. To make a long story short, my
Insurance co. paid for the damages, etc. and is now in the
process of recovering some of the
claim expenses. So far, A-1 claims no responsibility for
said damage. So please let the members
know of this sad state of affairs and do not use A-1 Auto
Transports.

809 area code.
The woman said "Hey, this is Karen. Sorry I
missed you--get back to
us quickly.
Have something important to tell you." Then she
repeated a phone
number beginning with 809.
We didn't respond.
Then this week, we received the following e-mail:
Subject: DON'T EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809, 284 AND 876
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION PROVIDED TO US
BY AT&T. DON'T
EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809
This one is being distributed all over the US. This
is pretty scary,
especially given the way they try to get you to
call.
Be sure you read this and pass it on to all your
friends and family so
they don't get scammed!
MAJOR SCAM:
Don't respond to Emails, phone calls, or web pages
which tell you to call
an "809" area Phone Number.
This is a very important issue of Scam Busters
because it alerts you to
a scam that is spreading *extremely* quickly, can
easily cost you $2400
or more, and is difficult to avoid unless you are
aware of it.
We'd like to thank Verizon for bringing this scam
to our attention.
This scam has also been identified by the National
Fraud Information
Center and is costing victims a lots of money.
There are lots of different permutations of this
scam.
HERE'S HOW IT WORKS:
You w ill receive a message on your answering
machine or your pager,
which asks you to call a number beginning with area
code 809. The reason
you're asked to call varies. It can be to receive
information about a
family member who has been ill, to tell you someone
has been arrested,
died, to let you know you have won a wonderful
prize, etc. In each
case, you are told to call the 809 number right
away. Since there are
so many new area codes these days, people
unknowingly return these calls.
If you call from the US, you will apparently be
charged $2425 per-minute.
Or, you'll get a long recorded message The point
is, they will try to
keep you on the phone as long as possible to
increase the charges.
Unfortunately, when you get your phone bill, you'll
often be charged
more than $24,100.00.
WHY IT WORKS:
The 809 area code is located in the British
Virgin Islands
The 809 area code can be used as a "pay-per-call"
number, similar to 900
numbers in the US. Since 80 9 is not in the US,
it is not covered by

There is also no requirement that the company
provide a time period
during which you may terminate the call without
being charged. Further,
whereas many U.S. homes that have 900 number
blocking to avoid these
kinds of charges, do not work in preventing calls
to the 809 area code.
We recommend that no matter how you get the
message, if you are asked to
call a number with an 809 area code that you don't
recognize, just
disregard the message.
Be wary of e-mail, or calls, asking you to call an
809 area code number.
It's important to prevent becoming a victim of
this scam, since trying
to fight the charges afterwards can become a real
nightmare. That's
because you did actually make the call. If you
complain, both your
local phone company and your long distance carrier
will not want to get
involved and will most likely tell you that they
are simply providing
the billing for the foreign company. You'll end up
dealing with a
foreign company that argues they have done nothing
wrong.
